sub not working correctly
Monday, December 12, 2005 5:00 PM
ok this is a convo that i had with lanman31337 hes obviously lanman and im ktrktrpmkneatr

[18:00] LANman31337: did you break something?
[18:01] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: idk maybe
[18:01] LANman31337: oh boy
[18:02] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: ok so i was messing with teh wires comming off the converter to get the sub to play on both the left and the right signal, and i got nothing. but i connected the wires together to short it out and the sub plays normally? what is up with that
[18:02] LANman31337: something isn't wired up right
[18:02] LANman31337: like i said, left + and -, right + and -, then constant power and ground
[18:03] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: thats what i was thinking
[18:03] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: thats the way its wired up
[18:03] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: lol
[18:04] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: when i connect them and short it out, the speaker stops working just like it should, but the sub starts playing both signals
[18:05] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: it plays the left signal only, but like i said when i connect both the pos and neg together on the right side then it works fine

the is some stuff that didnt pertain to the convo

[18:26] LANman31337: and the only way your subs play is if you short out the wires?
[18:26] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: only if i short out the right back speaker
[18:26] LANman31337: short out as in touching the + and -?
[18:27] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: other then that, it only plays the left
[18:27] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: yes
[18:28] LANman31337: so if you short the right speaker, the subs play, if you don't, both rear speakers work fine?
[18:28] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: if
[18:28] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: and the sub only plays the signal from the left
[18:28] LANman31337: isn't your amp a monoblock?

[18:29] LANman31337: you might have a bad converter or bad rca's
[18:29] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: i tryed 2 diff sets of rcas

[18:35] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: i have 6 wires 2 brown 2 yellow and 2 blue
[18:37] LANman31337: hmmm
[18:37] LANman31337: that's weird
[18:37] LANman31337: usually there's a red and a black for power/ground
[18:38] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: the 2 yellow are for the left and the 2 blue are for the right, and i have never used the 2 browns

[18:43] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: what do you mean how is it powerd
[18:43] LANman31337: do you have a power wire and ground going to it?
[18:44] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: yep both the 4 gauge that i bought online
[18:44] LANman31337: no the line level converter
[18:45] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: oh its only powerd by the speakers
[18:45] LANman31337: errrr
[18:45] LANman31337: it should have a power and ground going to it
[18:46] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: if thats what those 2 brown wires are. but i think its getting the power from the speakers
[18:47] LANman31337: it should be running a separate power source for it
[18:47] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: idk what to tell you im only using 4 out of the 6 wires before also and it worked fine? maybe not the best but it worked
[18:48] LANman31337: make a post on j-body
[18:48] LANman31337: see if anyone else has any ideas
[18:49] KtrKtrPmpkneatr: ok im going to post bits and pieces of this convo ok?
[18:50] LANman31337: ok

Ok so long story short, i have to use the line output converter for my amp cuz the ones on my head unit took a crap on me.

well i rewired everything last night, did a whole new install on it all, and once i connect both left and right RCA's only one works, like if i connnected one the sub would play but if i connected them both then the sub stops playing.... Now i wired everyting the right way, left + to + and left - to - and the same way with the right

the thing gets its power from the speakers.

what the hell is wrong with it?? the sub is the 800watt mono block pioneer gm-7100m
and the sub is alpine type r 1242d

any questions???

hmmmm.... I am confused, and the Blonde genius that is me,

I know this doesn't answer the question (sorry... but I can't diagnose that one over the internet)

How did the head unit RCA's "take a crap on you"?

Have you tried another amp to make sure it's not that amp?

Sorry if you have, didn't read the entire first post.
