Alright i have an amp and i had some small wire going to it...like 8 guage or so...so i upgraded to two. I noticed a pretty big jump in power (is that normal??) and like, when i turned the volume up the amp went into protection mode...I turned the gains down but does that usually happen when you increase your wire size or wat?

The size of the wire depends entriely on the power of the amp.
AWG Watts RMS Max (Not peak)
0 1540
1 1320
4 840
8 480
10 360
12 240
14 180
16 120
Cheap wire will be a bit lower. High grade wire will be a bit better.
how big is your amp? and how is it wired up?
the amp is 1000max/500rms and its wired to 2 guage wire and it was previously on 8 guage

Yes, you will notice the difference going to a larger gauge wire. How are the subs/speakers wired to the amp? Sounds as if you may be running too low of a load causing the amp to go into protection.

CTS - your recommendations are OK, but the size of the wire doesn't depend entirely on the RMS of your amps (well, it does), but instead on the efficiency of the amp(s) and the amount of current they draw. There's a ton of difference between a horribly inefficient class a/ab amp and, let's say, class d amps that have the same power rating.
This is a good page to look at when deciding on the size of power wire to run in your car:

Remember that they use RMS values. When in doubt, go overkill on the wire. I'd gladly spend a few extra bucks to ensure that nothing catches fire, and it's a good idea if you ever want to upgrade to more power.
The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
actually my amp didnt go into protection...i just thought it did andi thought somethin was totally wrong with it so i unplugged it and left it until today and just my ground came off some how and made the amp shut off all together which i thought was its protection mode...lol...my bad....but yeah so i should be hearin a different...thats good
