Resin Or Jelly?
Sunday, December 04, 2005 4:05 PM
I'm planning a custom enclosure. Planned it out, measured, calculated, smiled at myself and drank some coffee. I went to buy some of the materials and as I reached for the fiberglass resin, I noticed "Fiberglass Jelly". I've never done fiberglass before and don't know which to use, which would be best or even if there is a difference.

Could those of you with experience here give me the basic pros and cons of each?

Any advice would be very helpfull.

I've used both. I started with the Jelly b/c it seemed like it'd be easier to learn with. But now I can say, from experience, go with the Resin, soooo much easier But the resin is also a lil more messy b/c it's more 'watery' than the jelly.

Stay away from the jelly I tried it when I first got into the audio business and it just doesn't work as well. Use resin and it will be stronger, last longer, look better. Get yourself some bondo, too. If you want the surface conpletely smooth, you're gonna need it.

Glad I asked, I was very tempted to by the jelly.

So, my lesson for today is: Use resin on enclosures and the only jelly I should use goes with peanut-butter.

Thanks for the help.

Out of curiosity, what are you planning? I've bee installing professionally for several years. I might be able to offer some advice.

I'm planning a multi-piece trunk set.
Two 12" subs facing forward directly behind the rear seat (I generally have the seat down as I plan to do away with it someday).

The back of this unit will split in the rear and go around the spare tire cover and up the trunk walls for a smoother look. These walls will have lighted insets for amps (and possibly a capacitor). After building a basic mock-up of the main piece I can still get my spare out and I'd like to keep it that way if possible.

I want to do a raised cover above the spare tire also. This cover (I hope) will be contoured to flow into the walls. The cover itself will only serve two minor purposes really. 1) I want a nice set-up, but don't want to loose the use of the spare. 2) The few little things I need to carry in the trunk won't have a chance to bump around and damage anything.

DEFINETLY go with the resin Litlle crap can be done with the Jelly, but not big stuff

Little crap like this actually...

It's a remote-mount faceplate that I started working on quite awhile ago, but haven't gotten around to finishing yet. I need to make it cover up more of the faceplate mount tho. Sounds like you'll be doin' lots of glassing just like me I have quite a plan in my head hahah.

LOL. If I could make my car look like the plan/picture in my head, I'd be offered my own cable show with the guys from 'Unique Whips' saying "Man, I wish we were that good".

But, lets be real. With my artistic talent, the real reaction may very well be "So... you failed shop class huh?"

^^^ Hahah. I am hoping to make my car look like the plans in my head. It'll be a show-stopper I'm a VERY bad combination of traits tho... Perfectionist, and LAZY I want it to be perfect, but a lot of the time I became lazy and put stuff off lol.

I never use the word Lazy. I prefer to call it "in-depth planning stage". That way you still claim to be busy while watching TV or takeing a nap.
