High level radio cut out
Sunday, December 04, 2005 7:08 PM
Hey, Im pretty sure no one posted this before, but if they have just re-direct me, I couldn't find it. I have an after-market Head unit a JVC with after-market 6x9's in the back and a 800 watt amp with 2 10' ken-wood subs. If I turn my radio up loud with bass, the Head unit just turns off and then back on like a reset. all the presets stay there and works fine in till i turn it up again. Ive had this radio and setup in 3 different cars and haven't had this problem. Any body's opinion would help! Thanks! -Phil

I'd say the radio is drawing more power than the wiring going to it can provide.

Are you using the stock wiring? Try running a new power wire to the yellow supply on the aftermarket head unit. Go directly from the battery with an appropriately sized fuse on it.

what is your voltage when the bass hits? it may be going too low and causing your radio to shut off.

The voltage does go down pretty low, like 10v. So I will add a new power, and keep my old one. I'll just splice onto it. thanks guys. If this doesnt work Ill post again!

If your voltage is going that low, look into a new battery or cap for your subs. my voltage never dips below 13v with my yellow top and 1 farad cap.

Well, I have a new battery and alternator. Both ones that are meant for the car, no upgrade. I guess i'll add the wire and see if I can pick up a cap for cheap from someone at school or something. When the bass hits it does draw alot of juice. Thanks a bunch again. I figured it was just soemthing to do with a small power wire or something. I was thinking about getting a small cap for the yellow power wire to the H.U., figure... it couldnt hurt!

Depends on the size of the wire. If the radio has a fuse on the back you could just use that size.

Check the rating for the deck in the manual. Usually a 10 amp is sufficient... but if it's a "ultra super duper high power" (read: inefficient) then you might need a 15 or 20 amp fuse.

Don't use a 20 amp fuse on a 16 gauge feeder wire tho.. too much current will melt the wire first, not the fuse.

you also might try to upgrade the big 3. i just saw a write up about it and reminded me about it. This would help you the most. if that doesn't work, then go for a direct wire from the batt to the hu.
