For a 96 Olds, you would need to use a transponder bypass...

Its basically a small box which you would put a spare key into, and bury inside the dash somewhere... A small "antenna" cable comes off the box and wraps around the key cylinder-- This takes the signal from the key and lets the car think the key is in the ign..

Try putting the key in the ign w/o turning the car on, and remote start it-- If it starts, then theres a problem with the transponder... Those things can be finicky about working.. Try moving the bypass antenna loop a little closer to the outside of the cylinder.. Also, putting a ziptie on it-- NOT TIGHT!!- to hold it tighter to the cylinder is a good idea...

If the antenna looks good- you'll have to make sure its wired up correctly...

there is no wireless remote.. this does thios when your to use the key in the ignition.. i tried the on in my 00 cavi and it did the same when i disconeted the ignition wires from the transponder.. so i think the lock cylinder is bad

I assumed it had something to do with a remote start because you posted this is the audio & electronics forum... I just thought you were a 12 volt installer or something..

I think I know exactly what is wrong. It sounds like what happened is the yellow security wire from the igntiion to the security module is broken, cut, or has a bad connection. The yellow wire checks the ignition for the correct resistance, and if the wire is broken, etc., it does not get the signal. It will start but turn off again. The solution is to disconnect the battery for a few mins, reconnect it, and then fix the yellow wire. That will do the trick!
