Low beams don't work after factory deck replaced
Saturday, November 26, 2005 6:04 AM
I got a new deck from Future Shop which had a free install. So I figured I'd let them do it and save me the time. I noticed that the way the car's headlights work is now completely buggered up.

DRL's work as usual.
Low beams don't work most of the time. (I have to try A LOT of times to get them to come on and when they come on, sometimes they turn off all by themselves.)
High beams come on with no problem.
Can't use the blinkers unless key is in the ignition.
When the key isn't in the ignition, the marker for the high beams in the dash isn't lit, though the high beams are on.

Not a safe feeling having a car that the lights can go out on me at night when I have a 3 month old baby girl with me. Anybody have any quick ideas about what they might've messed up on the install?

Never mind, I figured it out. The control arm's broken.

Your headlight switch has gone bad. Has absolutely nothing to do with the deck install. Go to a dealership and get a new switch, probably around 100 CAD. Eventually your high beams will start to do the same thing. And unless your car got wired differently somehow, your turn signals never came on without the key in the ignition.

Thanks, Besse! I always thought they did, but I've been wrong before. I went out and picked up the new signal arm (which was around $100 CDN after my JCO discount) and installed it once I got home. 30 minutes later to get the case off and remove the 2 screws holding it in, tand put in the new one properly, the lights work again like a charm and that new arm is nice and tight. All tested and no problems. Just a weird coincidence that it started happening right after the deck install. Good to know I don't have to get rid of the new deck or bother looking around at other things.
