Dying Battery from my amp draining it?
Wednesday, October 19, 2005 4:29 PM
I have had my system in my 98 cavalier for about 6 months, and all of a sudden, the amp has started to drain the battery (yes I know it is the amp, because it is fine when I remove the fuse) and I just changed the battery. can anybody help me with this? is my wiring screwed? any help would be great!

Check the remote wire on the amp. You dont want it connected to anything with constant power, like your cigerette lighter, the + lead on the amp, car speakers, etc.

I will try that, I just don't understand why it would work for six months and then become a problem...

is it possible that you hit a pot hole or a big bump? That could loosen up some wires?

well if your having a problem with the battery draining which i had, and dimming of lights, get a cap, capacitor, works great and reduces that problem

A capacitor isn't going to help anything in this situation.

I've had amps start to drain the battery when it was off even though they still worked fine. Make sure you don't have voltage on the remote wire to the amp. It's possible that it has shorted with a +12V wire.

he's right, if current is going thru the remote this might be it also, i've had amps the cut on through the RCA wires
