6x9s Rubbing..
Saturday, November 19, 2005 2:27 PM
Well yesterday i installed new Soundstorm 6x9s.. Well i'm definatly impressed with them but i am needing to mount them lower so i dont have to cut my freshly wrapped rear deck cover.. So i was looking in the trunk and i dont know the exact name of them but they are like 2 small bars that seem like braces for the trunklid arms.. Well on the driverside when teh trunk is closed it rubs the magnet on the 6x9 and on the pass one its really close and has looked to rub a lil maybe while "bumping" Well my main question is, those 2 bars.. i know they are there for a reason.. and i'm not gonna ask "can i just take them out?" but i was wondering about just modifing them slightly.. Is it possible for me to cut out around 5" of them around the 6x9s and take a new peice of round bar and weld it.. were it will still be there just curved to avoid rubbing the 6x9s?
Also how easy is it to remove them so i can paint them afterwards and make it easier to finish welding them instead of just tack welding them in the car.. Just curious if doing this would cause problems or would this be just fine to do?
Here is pics of what im talking about around the 6x9s
- Driverside
- Passengerside

Don't mind the wiring either.. its temporary cuz i will be working on gettin them to fit lower and then i will solder the wires for a nice connection..

In my case, I have some large-magneted Pioneers. I ended up just re-positioning the bars on the mounts, so now they miss (barely) and also have a little more tension in them to keep the trunk open easier. I'm not sure if re-welding them will keep the desired strength. Logic would say yes, but I'm not sure. As far as taking them out temporarily, again, there's a good amount of tension in them. I think getting them back in would be the hardest part.

Is the tension mainly from the weight of the trunklid? cuz if so i can just wait till i take the trunklid off to installed the shaved one.. I might have to try the tension thing as well.. do u put them one down?

Well i lowered those bars like u mentioned and it didnt help.. i put it on the very bottom notch.. and it still just barely rubs.. I think i might have to go with the whole cutting and lengthing..
here is teh driverside one after the bars were lowered.. it lowered maybe a 1/4"

how do you move the bars? when I pop my trunk, my trunk lid goes up half way and falls back down lol.. it needs some more Ummph to go all the way up and stay there

i put on some gloves(safety if they decided to catch my fingers), some plyers, and u just put the plyers on the end, pull out like ur trying to pull out of the trunk then slide over.. it will pull inward so moving it up is tougher than down but just takes some muscle
