Ok so While my interior/stereo setup is going under the knife the winter, i need to figure out what things I am going to be putting in my car now.
I Had an old old set of Alpine Vr-12s, which absolutely pounded, also had a pair of 12" aluminum eclipses, which i have had for 5 or 6 years that seemed to be underpowered.
Right now I have my Rockford Bd1000a1 amp.
Its 2 ohm stable 1000 watts.
What kinda subs should I look at running that are out there now, a guy at bestbuy was tellin me the voice coils in the new alpine type r subs is kinda weak and i would look at blowing them pretty easily with myamp. I am open to either 2 or 4 subs, he was pushing the rockford, forget what series pretty hard one of their top lines.
I will listen to about anything, but want the best sound both SQ and SPL or a good mix.

Do you just want loud or do you want them to sound good too?

the older polk momo 12" would be perfect i think the model is 12mm. they are 500 watts rms.
To hit 145db your install is going to be the most important thing (and j-bodies don't have alot of trunk space). 1000wrms, provided it's unclipped, shouldn't hurt a type-R. Some people on realmofexcursion.com put 2000wrms into 1-15 daily without trouble, so 500 each should be fine.
IMO, if you want good sound and still hit loud, go with a Brahma or two, higher-end JLs (W6 or W7), a couple Resonant Engineering SEs, DD 9500 series (more for SPL, but they can sound really good in the right enclosure), or Kicker (just to name a few).
Also check out TCsounds.

If you are looking for quality you should check out Soundstream, their Pro and X Stream series are made for sound quality but also hit hard. If you are looking for straight SPL you should see their SPLX series. The pro series handles 500 watts RMS and the SPLX does 750 on the 12's.

He was pushing the Rockfords and bashin' the awesome Alpine's because they probably get more commision or something from Rockford than they do from Alpine.
Almost all the Chicagoland J's have heard Ryan's (Darkstars) full Alpine system and everybody loves it. I believe he has the MRD-M1005 amp (quoted from Apline-usa.com "Per channel into 2 ohms : 1000W x 1 (1% THD)" at 14.4V) pushing the two 12" Type-R subs, and it sounds just awesome.
I'm not usually a fan of mainstream car stereo, but the 2005 type r's are undeniably impressive
i'd stay away from jl and kicker, definately kicker ive seen so many amps n subs come back since we got them and quite franctly are not the cleanest subs ive heard, and from what ive seen the pricing on jl and kicker...your paying for the name. For the subs id go alpine type r's single voice coil 4ohm ran parallel thatll give ya a 2ohm load @ 1 channel,or some mtx 7500's again single voice coil same idea, now if ur amp is 2ohm stable x2 go w/ the dual voice coil's of those models.......both mtx and alpines will be excellent sq subs that will hit tight and clean.....or if u want to free up some space and go w/ 1 sub the alpine type x or mtx 9500 both retail for $600 but u can find a type x on ebay for around $280 shipped and the mtx for around $350ish shipped.....
Don't get a type x or a 9500 unless you get an extraordinarily wonderful deal on them. Otherwise, they are WAY overpriced for what you get. For that kind of money you could likely get 2-JL 12W6v2s (amazing SQ, can handle all 1000wrms, and likely hit your dB mark), 2-15" type-rs (wicked all around, and people have hit 150db with single 15s - check the TCAB section of www.realmofexcursion.com if you don't believe me) or one of the new RE XXXs. JL audio has a good reputation for a reason, and the only product they sell that I would consider being overpriced are the W7s (probably because I can't afford them). The W6s aren't terribly expensive (Sticker prices are $450Cdn each in the shops here), but sound amazing. I've never liked Kicker, but there's no denying that they play very, very loud and can be extremely accurate in the right enclosure. Deals on new L5 and L7s are common on Ebay, as well as deals on just about any other sub mentioned in this thread.
Bottom line is that you'd be VERY happy with absolutely every sub suggested here.

everyone who suggested Type-Rs is on the right track, theyre an amazing all around sub. they will hit hard and be amazingly precise and have great SQ, but i think someone said it earlier.. the install will make a big different, you can buy some nice subs and run em off a nice amp, but pay attention to the other things, get the right kind of box and size box to run what your looking to run. make sure u get an adequate wiring set up, and just pay attention to all the little details
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

i had lots of toys when i was young.slinky,etc.but once i found my penis, that was all she wrote
overpriced? umm no if anything is overpriced its jl i have not seen a w6 cheaper than $350 or more and believe me the 9500's destroy the w7 so the w6 would not even compete w/ the 9500 and this is coming from some1 whos owns a type-x has 4 9500's and i had a w7 and paid almost $600 for the w7......dont even start w/ RE,an amazing sub but very expensive, not saying your not getting your moneys worth......u can get type r's for around $130 each and i paid $250 for my type......so i dunno what ur talking about overpriced not to0 mention i got my 9500's 70% off retail....thats $160 a sub for u math wizzes...dont go jl alpine or mtx u could go infinity kappa also but ur pay a little more for similar quality
not to0 mention if he wants to run an RE sub ur gonna need a new amp something around 2,000rms@1ohm b/c i believe the xxx's are dual 2ohm.....and cheapest RE xxx ive seen was on ebay a 12 and it was $350-$400 and it was 2years old
Before this gets outta hand, I wasn't trying to start a scrap over which sub is better. All the prices you are quoting are only good for those of you living in the US (and I have to admit that I didn't check where he lives). With all the crazy deals I see on Ebay I sometimes wish I had dual citizenship. That's why I suggested only buying them if he got an extraordinary deal on them - if he can get them for as cheap as you say, he SHOULD go for it. If not, he should keep shopping for something cheaper (like a type-r). I'd be lucky to get a 15" 9500 here in Canada for less than $800. The Type X is no different, which is why nobody up here runs them. I paid that much for my 18D2 Stroker, which may not be great for SQ (unless tuned low), but I would put it against 4-9500s in a heartbeat when it comes to SPL. Needless to say, 03-CF isn't looking for a pure SPL sub, which is why I never mentioned the stroker (and they really do sound bad in huge boxes tuned high).
You're absolutely right about the XXX being power hungry and expensive - that's why I first suggested the SX (or SE). The SXs are (apparently) less than $250 for a 12, are considerably louder than the XXX, sound great, and can handle big power (1200+rms). That's pretty good if you ask me.
The reason I say the type-x and 9500s are overpriced is that "lower" alpine subs (specifically the Type R) represent an far better bang-for-your-buck at "normal person" prices. A 15" Type R here runs around $300-350Cdn (for the record, 12W6v2s retail for $450Cdn at the A&B Sound near me), they've been shown to handle rediculous amounts of power, and they are every bit as good at SPL and SQ as the higher-end type-x and 9500 (if not better). They also work extremely well in small enclosures (just like the type-x) - that's why the type-rs are so incredibly popular, and (I think) represent a much better value.
When you talk about JL subs, don't forget that the W6s and W7s are basically pure SQ subs that just happen to get fairly loud. 9500s and Type-X are largely considered to be more SPL-oriented, so the comparison isn't really valid. $600 for a W7 is an absolute steal. I can't touch them for less than $1200Cdn for a 12, which is retarded. I'd really only consider one or two if I competed in SQ (which I don't). Having personally owned several W6s, I would absolutely put the new v2s against the 9500 and type X in SQ. I've gotten 2 old school 12w6s in the mid 140s (at 30Hz, in a box tuned to 26Hz) on less than a 1000wrms, and won SQ comps with the same setup, so I know what they're capable of. They are pretty pricey, but are certainly a front-runner when it comes to SQ and low-end extension. Every 9500 I've heard sounds sloppy - yes, it's likely because of the install, but I've seen too many blown coils and cracked cones to trust that they'll hold up. They're apparently very tough, so I'm not sure what was done to kill them. Type-Xs up here are typically put in the same sentence as W7s - overpriced, with lower-tier, much less expensive subs (like the type-rs and W6v2s) coming extremely close in both SQ and SPL at half the price (or less). Like I said before, nobody here bothers with the type-xs, but many run the cheaper type-rs with huge power with no problems. The salesman at the shop that installed my alarm (AutoTemp) started laughing when I asked about the type-x (I only asked because I knew he was running 3-15" type-rs in his cavalier, and sells alpine gear). I can't remember exactly what he said, but he basically told me that for the price of the type-x subs, they don't really do anything better than much cheaper subs - they're no better at SQ than a type-r, are mediocre at SPL, and they cost a fortune. I do remember the words "Gucci", and "waste of money", and decided to change the subject to the Pioneer SPL subs at that point. I've also looked at the 9500s, and the salesman told me that I should look elsewhere if I was concerned with SQ at all. However, I think the right install would help dramatically.
As for infinity - I see perfect12s on ebay (new) for $110US all the time. That's what I would consider an amazing deal!
I apologize if I offended you. If he can get 9500s or type-xs for the prices you paid, he should BY ALL MEANS get them. I've seen low-end pioneer subs go for more than that up here. If he can't, though, he should seriously consider something else and save some money at the same time.
