i'm looking for a Double DIN touchscreen.. i was looking at the pioneer AVIC-D1, but i have no use for a Navi system being that i live outside of the country and it probably wouldnt work. what i need is DVD playback(not external), mp3, and ipod interface(control the ipod through the touchscreen). i like how the D1 has a slot for cd's and a slot for dvd's too, makes things simple.
my other option is a carputer but i've never seen one and i have no idea how they work. if someone can explain it to me i might end up going with that instead
the D1 does NOT play DVD's. only the Nav DVD-ROM

buy the Kenwood DDX8017. it's Double DIN and plays DVD movies. Kenwood also offers the i-Pod adapter

very nice. anyone use this? how is it in terms of sound? any other ones? i was hoping to spend 600-800, i found it on ebay for 1000..
i cant tell from any of the pictures, but does it have one slot for both DVD's and CD's or 2 seperate slots?(one for DVD's and one for CD's)
Eclipse has a nice double DIN unit as well. Most likely they both use one slot for both CDs and DVDs. The second slot on the D1 is used for the Navigation DVD-ROM like Eric said, it cannot play DVD video. The nice thing about the second slot is that you can be listening to a cd and have all the maps available for the navigation at the same time.

i'll look into the eclipse one as well... so with the ipod control i can ctrol the ipod through the headunit right? just toss the ipod in the glove compartment and never look at it again(until i add songs to it) cause then i'd only use the cd/dvd slot for, uh, dvd's and use the ipod like a hardrive for my music.
i'd go for the kenwood over the eclipse. while the eclipse sounds amazing, its REALLY picky on what cds it plays. and it wont play vcds either. the kenwood will play anything you throw at it

build a carputer and use a 10.4" touch screen, you'll be happier with it

its one slot. and awesome as hell. Ive used it and if I was keeping my cavi that was going to go into it.
well its going in an RSX, which has a Double Din opening, so i if i build a carputer, it'd still have to be a screen that fits perfectly into the opening with no modification.
heres a pic of an AVIC D1 in an RSX
thats basically the look i'm going for(which is why i dont want a flipout)
so now i dunno, the kenwood is slightly cheaper than the eclipse AVX 2494 but the eclipse has a 20GB Hard drive... i could get the kenwood and then with the money i save just get the ipod and the thing to connect them and it'd basically be the same.. i need more opinions.
unless someone can convince me as to why a carputer is better...
i would go the kenwood/ipod route. it's alot easier to get the music you want.
