space saving sub enclosures, do they exist
Thursday, October 27, 2005 1:47 PM
are there any out there. i dont want like ear bleeding sound, just a good thump and some nice crisp sound. my camaro had a pioneer premeir deck, 760 watt amp, and 2 12"jbl subs. the best system under $1000 that i have heard. i tried different speakers (yes even better ones) and they didnt sound good. i think my setup was ment to be, but now the car and system are gone.

i want a nice crisp sounding system and a sub or two. although i cant let it take up much room. if there are some out that will fit the left rear corner of the trunk that would be awesome.

what do some of you have that are space saving?

Bazooka is the brand

It's a BTA8200: 8 inch woofer, 200 watts. The amp is also built into the tube, making it very easy to install and space consious. I got it off of Ebay new for $200.

As for sound, it does everything I want it to. You won't hear it a block away, but you definetly feel it inside the car.

Something that fits into the corner and doesn't take up space? Build your own out of fiberglass and MDF.

I have the hand-eye coordination of an elephant and managed to build kick panels for my old Lumina. If I can do it, you can do it.

There's a couple sites listed in google for a search on "Fiberglass sub box".

the isobarick setup could work, but you gotta have two subs, but in a space less the size of one sealed box-

I built a sub enclosure for a polk audio 12" in the drivers side corner of the back of my trunk... polk subs are famous for extremely tight, low bass, out of extremely small enclosures. I can send you pictures soon, I will be getting a digi cam withing the next couple weeks, email me at skydeaner@yahoo.com.

Here's what the BTA8200 looks like in my 98 Cavalier's trunk:

Infinity Perfect 12DVQ

12" sub that will work in a .4 cubic foot box. that's a box that's like 9x9x9 sealed (not a useable set of dimensions, just given to show you the basic size).
It will take 1600 watts max (400watts RMS), has a 25-400Hz response, and is just about the "cleanest" sounding sub I've ever heard.

Perfect 12DVQ
go to Car audio then products then subwoofers

try image dynamics. one of the higher quality subs on the market. very clean sounding, very accurate a single 10 can be put into an enclosure as small as .25 cubic feet. their 12 can be put into i believe .75 cu. ft.

I think you guys are getting a little to small for him... Whn he says space that doesn't mean it has to be the size of an ipod nano.

my vote would be for the jl w0's the sound quality to box size is wicked, remember the box does not have to be to bigest box with 2 sub you should be fine with like 2.25cbft, and if you are good with number you can kind change the shape of the box, the jbl 3.1 amp powers them just fine

First off, you need to tell us your price range, if you're looking to pick up a used sub or new, and what size power amp you're running to the sub. You say you want clean crisp sound in a small package so it sounds like you want a nice small sealed box. Not alot of output, but a nice bit of bass to go along with your music.

Now, are you planning to build this box yourself? If you want great fitting/looks and to get the most space out of the corner as you possibly can your best bet is fiberglassing. Here is a pic of a buddy of mines box thus far (still needs to be carpeted)

So as you can see, the box basically is form fitted into the corner, you get the max space possible... it's just alot harder to build then a simple MDF box.

If you don't want to take on the challenge of fiberglass and stick with MDF then just check around for a nice 10" sub or even a 12" and just read the spec sheet and see what size the sub needs for a box. I recently picked up a MbQuart 12" sub used in imaculate shape for $60, built a 0.95cu^ft sealed box for it that measured I believe 14" x 16" x 10.5" and it sounds really really nice, probably would be exactly the sound you'd be looking for. But you can find subs that will go down a fair bit smaller then 0.95cu^ft even 0.5cu^ft and smaller...

The way you can calculate the cu^ft of a box is this, take the INTERNAL dimentions in inches, multiply, then divide by 1728. So for my example above

(12.5" x 14.5" x 9") / 1728 = 0.944cu^ft

So if you want to build a square MDF box go out to your car and figure out what size of box you can spare and then you will at least have an idea how much air space you have for the sub. Once you determine that... figure out a sub that fits into that air space. I'd recomend JL audio, Image Dynamics, MbQuart, or Focal if you want really nice sound. It all depends on your price range and what size amp you have to power the sub. You need to get some more info before we send you off on a sub buying spree

The problem with small sub woofers in small enclosures = effciency. The only decent bass is at the higher levels in most cases. Which is why I am not a huge sealed box fan at any rate.. AND Tom you reccomend the big names, yet you fail to mention some of the greatest SQ subwoofers of all time.. the Adire Shiva.....almost any of ED's Flat Cone woofers.... They can compete on the same level and exceed those, not to mention cost less in the process. BUT the is ALL SUBJECTIVE.. many people have different tastes, so the only way to dec ide is to listhen up. I have a personal taste for Type R's in a nice BP box (6 chamber with perfect knotch filters*)

Those were just the names that came to my mind when I think SQ because they are the ones I've actually played around with and enjoyed. I'm sure if you wanted to list off every SQ woofer out there it would be quite an impressive list. I've heard great things about the Ed and Adire subs... but like I said I've never tried them out so I'm not about to put my name beside them because of what I've heard not experienced.

And I'm in agreement with the sealed boxes lack of efficiency, the box I described above I built for a friend of mine looking for the same things Jeremy asked for, he wanted it clear, not ground pounding at all, and to just fill in the lows. That little MbQuart setup cost me next to nothing because like I said the sub $60, MDF and carpet were free, and I found a old school very nice PPI 400RMS amplifier for $10 someone was getting rid of because the power connector had come loose... 1hr of my time resoldering and cleaning it all up works like new. So for under $100 I have a setup that fills the bill for what Jeremy asked for, that was my whole reason behind the example.

I'm like you though, much prefer a ported or bandpass box. My system actually has (2) 12" Concept Audio PT12's with 600RMS for each sub in a 6cu^ft ported box tuned for about 33hz. I like the nut shaking bass... but can appriciate the accuracy of a good quality amp/sub in a tight sealed box.

my image dynamics idq has a -3db point of 17hz. in a .5 cu. ft. enclosure with 2 10's and 500 watts doing 140dbs. it gets low and rattles your ass of in a very small enclosure.

I agree with Short Hand - small subs in tiny enclosures are not ideal. Low bass extension almost always suffers, and efficiency is not great. I'm a huge fan of ported enclosures tuned really low, but sealed is totally fine.
If you have the know-how, building your own fibreglass enclosure into one of the rear corners of the trunk may be your best bet. People have also built enclosures into their spare-tire well, and a few have even put subs in the side panels on either side of the back seat (an idea I've been tinkering with).
There are dozens of great SQ subs that would work well in a small enclosure (sealed or ported). Off the top of my head are JL W6s (and W7s, well pretty much anything JL), Image Dynamics (great subs!), A/D/S RS10s or RS12s (I think they're now called 310rs and 312rs), Boston Acoustic Pro subs, Adire Shivas, Dayton Titanics, Alpine type-rs, well the list keeps going on and on. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what you're preferences are. Of the list I gave you, the Adire and Dayton subs are probably the cheapest (<$200US new for a single 12"), but incredible bangs for your buck (they're used in high-end home theatre systems for a reason). I've had wonderful experiences with W6s and a/d/s subs, and guys here in Calgary have been having great success with type-rs in small enclosures. Hope this helps!
