HVAC - Head Unit switch

In my 96 Caviler my HVAC controls are up top and my head unit is on he bottom, would it be too much work to switch these two? also I will post pictures so you can see what I mean.

My 98 is the same way, and I wonder this also. The openings in the dash look like it would work just fine (using the DIN adapter for the HVAC on the bottom, and the headunit fitting flush on the top), but I don't know what's behind the dash, wiring and space-wise.

i think that there is a metal tube right behind the hvac, and this is in the way for the HU.
if i remember right you need to swap the plastic thin thats around your cluster and hvac and HU with a 00+ and also swap the metal tube that is under or behind the hvac.
I'm not positive on that one tho!!!

Is the metal tube part of the HVAC, or just something that is behind it? Either way, could it be removed/rerouted to make room? My experience in working behind the dash is limited to putting in a new headunit, I'm not afraid to go digging, but I don't want to break anything.

the metal tube is not part of the hvac, just behind the dash. I think this is for security purpose.
You can take it off, but you have to take everything apart first, and when i say everything, its EVERYTHINGS. dash, glove box, peice that is under the winshield, steering, air bags...
then you will be bale to unbolt it, and swap everything for a 00+
I have seen post on this before. run a search in archive, you might find somethings.

I've searched more than once for such a thing, all I've managed to find are people that have moved their HVAC to their center console or other unusual places.

Why the need to swap dashes? Just eyeballing it, it seems a swap would work fine as long as there was sufficient space behind the current HVAC location to hold the headunit.

Oops, accidently replied to that thread instead of this one.

I didn't see this metal piece that was mentioned in those pictures. Where was it, and would it be possible to just swap the HVAC and headunit locations (using the DIN adapter for the HVAC on the bottom) without swapping out the entire dash? I don't have time, money, or motivation for a full dash swap. It would probably look better to do a full swap, but is it absolutely needed?
