Dual MP3 Player or JVC DVD player?
Thursday, October 06, 2005 5:47 PM
I bought an Alpine mp3 player with a motorized faceplate a few months back and then it broke.. it cost about 300, and as far as I can understand it happens to alot of them, and even if they get fixed, they do it again.

So anways, should I spend $150 on a Mp3 player, or $300 on a DVD player (cause I have most of my CDs backed up on CD as MP3, and now i have a DVD burner)? Also, I know nothing of Dual CD head units. PLus, i would be worried that for $150, reliability would be and sound would be compromised....

Any input would be nice.

Dual

JVC

I would never buy a DVD player that retails under like $800. Less than that is just asking for troubles like low resolution, formats it will read, low brightness, not user friendly. I would definitely avoid Dual. If your budget is around 300, I would put that into a decent CD headunit or save up for a good DVD unit if that's what you're wanting.

On a side note, what broke on your apline unit? I have yet to see an Alpine deck break except for a few that wouldn't eject a CD which was fixed by reseting the unit.

Stay away from Dual. I have several friends who work at BB and they say that they get anything Dual back within a few weeks. There is a reason that they are sold so cheaply. The adage you get what you pay for is definetly true for them. What model Alpine did you get. If you have only had it for a few months you should be able to get it fixed under warranty. Where did you buy it?? Did you have it installed by the place where you got it or did you install it yourself?? If you had them install it you should be able to take it back and they will replace it for free under warranty. I believe that Sony is the only ones who actually make you send the stereo back to them to get fixed. most other companies will let the shop replace it with a new one and then send the bad one back. Check in to this cause if you can get it swapped out then you dont have to worry about if this HU will do it again.

dual should be shot in the face,as for jvc there not to0 far behind, there stuff is garbage and it will not last, jvc offers fancy displays and cheap dvd players as far as sound quality and being able to control freq/hz settings you get nothing. You'd be better saving up for a pionner or alpine thats has a supertuner/time correction and things of that nature.....jvc sux

I have owned a JVC HU for the past two years with mp3 playback and 12 disk cd changer controls. I have had no issues what so ever other than the LCD display when I left it in below zero temperatures last winter. I just put it in my pocket for like 10 minutes put it back in and everything worked good as new. Cold weather and LCD don't mix well. It changes disks from the changer flawlessly and if you want advance SQ features I suggest getting an equalizer. The HU is good for the basic SQ settings but everything else you'll have to pay for. I got one from the arsenal series that most featured 3 sets of outputs(5v sub, 3v front and rear), CD changer contols, Aux link, mp3 playback from either the aux link, actual player, or cd changer. JVC is my HU to go. My friend had a Alpine 9855 if I recall correctly. MY JVC gave much better playback and upgradeablity to the actual HU was more too.

Dual is Jensen, Jensen was bought by Audiovox, and now DUAL is Jensen renamed.

If your Alpine is only a few months old, why go down in "quality"? Warrenty should still be in effect

EZ3K1EL - i hope you realize that the JVC is does not have a DVD screen, it will play DVD discs but you need to get an external screen to see them

I have a KD SH-99 JVC MP3 Headunit (50x4) and it is great.. everything you said is wrong about this unit.. it lets you control lows mids and highs ( each can have Freq. Length, and level adj. ) along with 12 presets.. 3 outputs.for front rear and an adj. for subs..adjustible AUX port in front.. DVD ready.. and was also "Headunit of the year" a couple years back by a few magazines ( cant recall ) really is a great unit and doesnt reflect any of the negative things you have said about JVCs product.. maybe the cheap ones are @!#$.. but not all

plus it is pretty

I would be purchasing it to play MP3s on DVD.

I'm not really sure I ever had a warranty on it. But either way, if I get it replaced or fixed seems worthless, because I kept reading about people having the same thing happen after having it replaced and fixed several times. . .. . although i cant seem to find the site yet.

Nothing that i know of ... but that is the problem, it wouldn't eject the CD. And If you ask me, that is broken if you have to reset it everytime it gets stuck..... but I still may try to rest it I guess - woulkd be pretty crappy to reset all of the sound settings everytime

well.. I got the JVC at a deep discount and your right.. I wouldnt have paid 450 for it.. but im saying is that even if its not the cheapest it does have the features you were claiming that JVC didnt carry.. btw.. I DO like alpine better.. I really do, im doing all alpine in the whole car ( I have a post in A&E about my Alpine setup and l running the 9855 that I can get for like 199.. and thats a great deal and I intend on picking it up, I wasnt trying to take a dump in your lucky charms.. I was just saying in all fairness that not always are all Headunits the same even if its within the company and JVC is not always crap..but Dual.. Dual is always crap
