ok, ok, ok, ok, I KNOW... I should never let Best Buy touch my ride.
But I did... and I need help.
I used to have money, and unfortunately was laid off, and had to downsize my ride.
Anyway, I've got a 2005 Sunfire 1SV... roll up windows and everything
However, I had the following equipment from my last ride that I pulled out before I sold it, and finally had the money to get someplace CHEAP to install it.
hence Best Buy,
Here is what I had installed:
Up Front:
Boston Acoustic 6.5 Pros in Stock Location, Crappy Plastic Adapters used I think.
In Rear:
Boston Acoustic 6x9 SX95s in the rear location.. stock fit perfectly.
Amps:
4 Channel XTANT A4004 Amp powering the rears
4 Channel KENWOOD KAC849 Amp powering the fronts
Head Unit
Sony MEX-5DI
Problem:
Sound is not very good. At anything above moderate volumes... it sounds like the speakers are blown (they are not) and the entire door panels rattle and vibrate and fart and throw up noise all over themselves.
ONLY when bass comes on.
Highs can be pushed fairly far... but try putting the Black Eyed Peas in....
FUGHETTABOUTIT.
Sounds like the door panels are gonna vibrate off the door.
Know what a pager on vibrate sounds like when left on tile? TRIPLE THAT SOUND AND NOISE and you have an idea of what I'm talking about... AND AT MODERATE VOLUMES.
There is almost NO BASS... it's...
NASTY.
WHATS UP EVERYONE?
PLEASE HELP AN ELECTRONIC IDIOT.
Oh, and they talked me into a 1 farad capacitor as well, said if I didn't have it it wouldn't sound right... too much power?
HELP!
Thanks,
Richard

They shouldn't be rattling as much as you say they are. the doors will definitely rattle. They do use crappy plastic adapters because there cheap and cost effective. The cap is pretty much useless in there so you should get your money back. Also the problem with the speakers sounding weak could possibly just be that the amp isn't set up right if it has a crossover built in.
hahaha, u took it to best buy!!
i'm sorry
as far as im concerned the people who work at best buy are complete MORONS!!!
they have no clu what they are doin, your best bet is to find someone in your area to fix it for you, chances r you can pay them in beer if they're cool
good luck tho
Unless you paid then to do CUSTOM work to your car (which you did not) why do you expect anything more than a Drop In Installation? if your speakers which are old and used sound blown, maybe they are. Check your crossover settings, and your input sensitivity on your amps. If you need help, get out the manual. If your speakers up front out out so much bass they shake your plastic door panels, put some sound deadner in the door so stop it from rattling.
it sounds like best buy used that huge adapter for your fronts that causes your speakers to touch the door panel. This causes the speaker to be pushed in so it cant move so when you play something through them they sound blown and since they are up against the door panel and they try to start moving they are rattling the door panel.
yeah, i know the adapter plates they probably used. they're angled, so that the woofer angles upwards towards you. good idea, but our door panels push against the bottom of the speakers, which would be causing the extreme distortion, so i guess they didn't consider that part of it when they made them... i'm sure since the guy at best buy just wanted to get everything put in and move on, he wasn't too concerned with testing everything. they'll prolly fix it for you if you take it back and complain, but if you'd rather do it yourself, just find a way to keep the panel away from the bottom of the speaker. a few screws with wide heads on them should work, just screw them in halfway around the bottom. that is as long as your speaker has enough holes around it to work.
re-make your adapters out of 1/4" thick MDF wood, and adjust your crossover settings... for your fronts, turn the amp's crossovers off, and use the ones that came with your component speakers. if you need help with those, go to a real car audio shop, not best buy.
for the record, not all best buy installers are morons. i have a friend of mine at a nearby best buy that is VERY good, and knows his sh*t VERY well. he installed my viper 791xvr for me, cuz im too lazy to wire up that many damn wires, and my fat body aint easy to squeeze under that steering column.

Hey Guys...
Thanks for the responses!
I got to see the adapter they used... it was black plastic and, as you guys said, was HUGE.
It literally was probably 3 or 4 " wide, and moved the speaker almost flush with the door panel.
By the way, these speakers are NOT old... and Boston Pro 6.5's are grrrrrrrrreat...
Also, the amps had the crossovers set to full pass and allowing the full range of audio into the speakers.
I've changed that... now I guess I need to get the MDF made.
Thanks everyone for the help!
Richard

doberman, the quote in your sig is slightly incorrect, the line is "...ther nerve to preach about self DISCIPLIINE." no biggey, just figgerd id let ya know.
but, back to topic, those plastic things make the speakers stick way too far out, and dont do much as far as resonance...thinner mdf brackets will probably fix your problems.

1/4" in MDF will be too thin. go 5/8" or 3/4 in
What im not understanding is, as to why you are running a 2 4 channels amps and not just one?
you snooze you lose!
keep working, millions on welfare depend on you!
He could be bridging them to 2 channel, might be all he has right now.

i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
I would talk to the guys at any install shop before getting any work done. Any place you go to can have people that don't know what they are doing. In my case, a lot of the private shops around are a joke, but the guys I work with in the Roadshop at Circuit City know what we're doing, and we do a good job. Some places it's the opposite. Spend a little time to talk to the guys and it can really pay off.

do you guys think 1" MDF will be too thick? I'm going to be installing a set of Infinity Reference components. The total depth of the woofer is about 2 1/16".
Peace Out!!!
I have the same set of speakers, and I used 3/4" MDF and it fits perfectly
Go Premium, it builds character!
if there is no bass make sure the have + on the speaker with the + on the amp and so forth. dont worrie about the best buy mistake a few of us have went do than path befor....i did

but i learned
It is not Best Buys fault that you didnt research the place that you were taking your car to. Would you take your car somewhere to have the engine worked on with out speaking to the mecanic and getting an idea of his work. There are Best buy locations that have complete idiots working for them but there are others that have people that know what they are doing. I have several friends who work there around here and they actually know what they are doing. If you are going to let anyone work on your electrical systems I would ask them if they are MECP certified. There is only one certification for 12 volt installers and that is it, you have to restest every 2 years so you are kept current on technology. Not saying that this will solve every issue you have with an installer but you are less likely to have poor installs if they are MECP certified.
Donovan
sure he should have gone to a good shop, but it IS Best Buys fault for hiring some idiots.
Peace Out!!!
you should set the crossovers highpass to around 120HZ on the frount and 80 in the back (or whatever sounds good to you) so you wont have to much bass going to them.
