someone on my corolla forums has been wondering - is there any way he could get his hands on an OnStar unit and have it installed in his corolla?
if not, does anyone know of an alarm system that actually calls your phone when it goes off? he's looking for a higher level of security than the DEI Responder alarms(the ones that have a pager remote).

well...nevermind about the OnStar. i found my answer for that...so my second question still remains.

I haven't seen any cellular alarms, but there may be some out there. If they are, there would most likely be a monthly fee for the cell service, since it would act just like having a cell phone. Depending on how technical your friend is, he could get a prepaid phone, take it apart, and use a relay with one of the outputs on his alarm to make the phone call his house. That might actually be cheaper too.

Lol ok then. You might possibly be able to find a shop with somebody that would know how to do it, but I would make sure before letting somebody do it.

OnStar will only work on vehicles that came with it from the factory. it's not an aftermarket add-on. either you have it, or you don't.

OnStar is a service of GM. I doubt they would want it on there competitors.
GM will sell the OnStar service to anyone who will pay for it. You can already get it in an Acura, among others.
You're right in that OnStar is not available as an aftermarket accessory... but that's not to say it can't be retrofitted as such.
To buy the components from a dealer is prohibitively expensive so your only real option is to go to a wrecker and find a car with OnStar and salvage everything you need.
I know for a fact that this can be done because when I looked into it a long time ago, someone had already done it in a pre-03 j-body.
Might have been Lenko or Mark Pain, now that I think about it.
As far as OnStar is concerned, you will have the car it came out of. They don't need to know it's now in a Corolla, so make sure you get the VIN for the car you're salvaging it from, just in case they ask for it.
If you're only interested in the security aspects though, why not look into something like Lojack or Boomerang?
