Mounting XM Antenna Inside Car - Reception OK?
Thursday, September 29, 2005 12:41 PM
I'm shaving my stock XM antenna on the roof and switching to an aftermarket in-dash radio along with the required aftermarket XM receiver and antenna.

Is it going to be OK to mount the XM antenna on my rear deck, next to the child restraint hook-up? I don't want to lose my reception or anything, but I think it should be OK.

Anyone who has done this, please let me know how it turned out.

Thanks!

Remember XM antennas require a clear line of sight to the sky (I work for them, customer service rep). Where's the child restraint hook-up, the center of the rear deck? It'll work OK as long as you do not have window tint. The tint blocks signal. Also, you MIGHT get some dropouts if you're driving south, because the antenna will be blocked from the roof of the car. I know shaving the antenna is the whole point of getting rid of it on the outside, but mine is mounted on my trunk lid and works great.

I did a couple installs where people wanted them on the dash. Try putting it in your center HVAC vent.

if you've got a stock spoiler, mount it under that, on the trunklid. works better that way.

i had mine tucked all the way between the rear deck, and the window, and it worked fine, no drops, or nothing... even south......
when i moved it to the front dash, i had a couple of drops.....

OK, so get them to tuck it as far back toward the rear window as possible?

And does anyone have proof that mounting it under my spoiler will work? I kinda like that idea, too.

Thanks for all the help

i would imagine that mounting it under the spoiler wouldnt work too well, since it does kinda need a "clear view" to the sky... but my suggestion is, to leave enough slack to where you can play around with it, out it under the spoiler, and if it keeps cutting out, for no aperent reason, then place it somehwere else.
I toyed with the idea of putting inside, between the windshield, and my dash, but that didn't work as well as the rear deack... and NOW, even better, the "factory" location, but with not as big of a "pimple".... right at the top of the rear window on the roof,,,,

Is your back window tinted? If so, don't mount the antenna there. The metal peices in the tint will kill the signal. Under the spoiler might work, never tried it. Front window might be ok, I tried it in a friends car, but unless the car is pointed south it's hard to get a signal. The best places are on the top of the hood, roof, or trunk. If you're using an aftermarket setup the antenna is going to be a lot smaller than the factory setup anyway, so it'll look better.

Mine is laying on my back deck, as far back to the window as it will go. Only time I lose signal is when I am at a drive thru. Been that way for 8 months now.

Sig removed because some people cry too much.
