I never thought about this before but when u get a pack of speaker wire or a neon theres a copper line and a steel (i guess) line. Witch is suppost to be + and -
I believe the copper is the positive and the steel coloured one is the negative, but I'm not 100% positive, nor am I even sure if it really matters which one is which, I think they may be just different so you get each end of the speaker wire connected properly.
whenever i get speaker wire or neons there always a line down one of the wires no matter wut kind of wire it is.. line = neg.
doesn't matter, but steel is worse that copper for conductivity, why would you want steel wire for speakers?

i think its tin not steel tho
The different colors and the line on the insulation are just to make it easy to connect the wires to the correct terminals. They have no bearing over which side should be positive or negative. In the case of speaker wire, you run AC current to the speakers so the current flows both ways on each side.
