New MTX SPL sub
Tuesday, September 27, 2005 4:51 PM
I was at a shop getting an alarm put in my cavy when the sales guy mentioned this monster:
http://www.thetrue22.com/specs_01.htm

22-inch subwoofer, weighs 369 pounds (not a typo), and linear x-max of 2.5". Not at all feasible for our little grocery-getters, but interesting none-the-less.

Anyone know approximate costs, release-dates, enclosure requirements?

"130 decibles... thats louder then airplane engine"

now I knwo there meter isn't the greatest but come on, a 369 lb, 22 inch sub with 6,000 watts and there hitting 130 db

^ well...that probably has something to do with the 11 volts it was reading....and the fact that it looked like they mounted it free-air using the trunk as the box.

I'm sure a proper ported box and 13 volt would yeild much better results.

probably mounted like that cause

A: its MTX. aka POS

B: the size of that mofo. box airspace MUST be larger than a trunk. might get it to fit properly in a escalade or sumthin

mtx pos? i have 4 12'' 9500's....i've got one of the loudest and cleanest systems ive headr, mtx has one of the cleanest subs on the market......as for the jackhammer i dunno, they basically used the car itself for the box so it probably sounded like crap.....for $2,500 for a 22'' sub that youd need another $3,000 in amps and power id rather get some RE subs and some mcinstosh amps or something in that area instead, but mtx does make some go0d stuff believe me

They probably weren't running it at full volume. My car hits 135db with 250 watts and 2 MTX 12" Road Thunders. As far as MTX being POS just look at their build quality compared to rockford fosgate Or this video comparing their subs to kicker and JL Audio.

sick vid fast, again i agree, mtx is awesome, you pay a little bit more but you get great quality

And if 22" isn't big enough get one of these

The clarion 32-inch is OK, but can't really handle that much power. More of an SQ sub (if anyone can call a 32" sub that). Apparently audiobahn makes/used to make a 34-inch SPL sub. I've never knew they existed, but they're out there. Not that it matters - they're wall-only subs, unless you have an SUV or van to play with.

Has anyone actually heard one in person? Have any of these hit the competition circuit yet? How much do they retail for? $2500? $5000 - I've heard both #s mentioned.
I'm just curious to see how the jackhammer stacks up with the other top SPL subs out there (DD, Mmats, RE, Treo, CV, Pioneer, etc., or even MTX's own 9500s). It would be sad to spend $5K on a sub, and still lose to people (running the same amount of power) who have far less money invested in their subs.

I just checked the MTX Displacement Calculator It would only take 5 MTX T9515-04 15" subs to out perform the 22" sub by .86db. You would also save $4000. You could go with 10 15's and still be cheaper while being 6.88 db louder.
Re: New MTX SPL sub

I went to the displacement calculator, and the 22" jackhammer has a MSRP of $7500US. WOW! I thought my 18d2 was rediculous at a MSRP of $900 a few years ago.
I could buy 3 more 18s, amps, batteries etc, wall it and tickle 165-170db (if not more) for the price of just 1 subwoofer..... Who exactly are MTX catering to with this overpriced monster, anyway?
Re: New MTX SPL sub

they are catering to........mass media hype and public relations.

either way MTX is a great company, but i've always been confused at why they would make this other than P.R.. ehh whatever as long as they still make quality products ill be backing em. this coming from a dedicated R.E./Orion guy.....

Yeah, I hear ya! When I die, my stroker is going to form part of my tombstone.

It seems pretty pointless to build a sub that only 20 people on earth would consider buying. Publicity is a great thing, though. Look at Pioneer. I've had quite a few pioneer goodies, but always considered it fairly low-end, ghetto equipment that 16 year-olds bought before they could afford the high-end stuff. Now they have just about every SPL record...
It would be nice if MTX made a sub that could compete with the new RE XXX and the subs from Adire and Treo. The 9500 is OK, but they should make something to bridge the gap between the jackhammers and the 9500. That's something a basshead like me would be seriously interested in.

yeah kinda like how phoeniex gold came out with an amp every year that came with its own alternator and wiring and cost 50,000$ seems anytime this big type subs come out they are big hype but never really pan out.

maybe the new RFL 152 will bridge the gap. A 15" sub weighing 56 pounds with 4.35" of total, peak-to-peak excursion, 2000 watts rms 4000 peak.

the rfl will not play music just a one note wonder competition sub. that thing is just to generate hype is all. Like the parthenon by adire and the xmx by RE. richard clark made a 60 inch sub BUT it used a bread truck for an enclosure. Its a hey look what i cando type of thing.
Re: New MTX SPL sub

I dunno. I'm a bit skeptical about the RFL (as well as the Boston sub). Something's a bit fishy when they build a sub that you can take apart and "rebuild" whenever you want. It's as though MTX knows that they can be killed fairly easily during comps, and didn't want their service department full of these things. I'd rather have a sub that dies every 3-5 years and costs me $200 to recone (far less hastle), than have a couple of RFLs that (from the way MTX markets them) need a rebuild after every burp. I suppose the DIY rebuild idea is OK if you're the kind of person who throws square waves through his subs and fries one once a month.
Anyone out there have any experience with the RFLs (real-world power handling, enclosure requirements, longevity etc.)?

130db is weak and anyone in the hobby serious can hit 140, 150+ is where its at

Competitors dump thousands of watts more power into a woofer than what the manufacturer builds them for. strapping amps per coil is not uncommon thats why they make them field reconable. if you toast it then you can fix it and not screwed over bc of what is considered user error. its for competitors not for the average basshead. those mtx head to head things are such bs too. Kinda dont like they way they name drop in the industry. Thats nice that they are doing comparisons but i find it hard to believe that their subs are seriously better in all areas.if you are gonna compare make it at least remotely fair

Re: New MTX SPL sub

Granted, the RFL is for competition, but if someone's gonna put double the rms into one, why on earth would someone serious about competing buy one? There are several MUCH stronger (and louder) subs out there for roughly the same $$ that can handle 4000+rms. Off the top of my head, RE, Treo, Elemental, Ground Zero, DD, Mmats and Cerwin all make subs that are field-proven to take that amount of power (and more) time and again and rarely fail. What needs to be done is for MTX to compare their RFL against these SPL subs. Only then would people believe their hype.

The is one problem with that comparison.

the rockford amp used to compare is a class AB, and the MTX is a D class. so obviously and amp that is designed MORE towards mids & highs is gonna run hot when using for a sub.

ive seen cheap companys do this many time. I would like to see that same MTX amp comparre to any Rockford BD class. then it would be a fare comparrison.

Actually the MTX amp used for comparing the heat is a 2 channel class A/B amp. The only time a class d was used was in the comparison of the FET but again they were both mono sub amps.

130db with the doors open and not properly built enclosure is not to shabby.... BUT HEY, I could be wrong. ....... The way they were testing it is comparable to say taking the top off your ported enclosure and making your subs run nearly in free air. What more would you expect ? AS for MTX......Their is a difference between pumping testage wattage into a sub and what it can recreate sound wise. I would take a w7 over a F*$%&( 9500 any day of the week.
