do i HAVE to HAVE the passlock bypass?? for remote
Sunday, September 25, 2005 12:20 PM
alarm shops tell me i DONT need the passlock bypass if a spare key works and turns the key on- which it does but oin the forums they make it sound like i have to have it so im a little confused.. i already have the alarm installed and its about 4-5 more wires to do remote start but im not sure if it will work or not due to the passlock bypass i may need?

What the shop was referencing to was some keys are chipped to the car (ie Caddilac, Jetta, etc) . Since our ignition keys are not chipped, a spare key will start the ignition no prob. Now with PassLock, all it will do is check if there is a key in the ignition. Doesn't necessarily have to be the correct one. So, yes, you may need the bypass.

ALL Cavaliers and Sunfires from 95-05 will have passlock regardless of what anyone tells you. Viper's 555L or 556LW are the most common bypasses that are used.

The passlock system is integrated into the ignition key cylinder itself.... The keys don't have any chips or anything in them...

You know.. I'm probably one of the most patient people on this forum (most of the time)....

but DAMN IT Brandon....

stop wasting YOUR TIME... and stop wasting OUR TIME and just go and buy the RIGHT BYPASS MODULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a DEI 555L!!!!!!!!!!

Then you won't have to come on the forum whining how your "wrong module" isn't f'n working.

How many posts do you have to make about it before you just go and buy the right f'n one? For crying out loud man!!!!

Not true. I had a remote start/alarm installed in my car without a bypass module.

What the hell is the difference between all the DEI passlock model's, there's the 555L, the 555LW, the 457GW, and a bunch more. I know everyone says to get the 555L, but I'm just curious. Supposedly the 457GW has doorlock databus interface, why? And the 555LW has a learn routine that does what? By the way it's going into a 01 cavalier with factory powerlocks/ keyless entry. I installed the powerlocks my self by ripping everything out of another junked cavalier. Boy was that fun, you have to rip the entire car apart because GM didn't think it would be simpler to use the same wiring harness for all they're cars. You also have to get a NEW and different BCM, a used one wont' work, it's coded to the car. So ya back to the passlock modules.

Thanks,
Robert

because a lot of manufacturers make a lot of different systems to put into their cars as safety devices. toyota, gm, ford, nissan, mercedes, chrysler, etc, all have thought of what is "best" in their mind.

the one with the doorlock module is for the 02 and up ones that control everything through the bcm. the 555s are just resistors and stuff like that. if you've ever cracked one open they arent that much to look at. but they make things so mcuh easier. I can do a remote start in my car in no time. without the modulem, you see how much more of a pita it is.

Ok, I see now that the bcm's are different when comparing the 01's and 02's. They must have put the relays or something inside of the bcm cause I know the driver side lock switch and actuator on the 00 and 01 went through the bcm while the rest of the car was independent. The only reason I know that is because of trial and error, it sucked then I found gmpartsdirect and got the new bcm cheap. Labor wasn't though. Any reason I would want the one with resistors?

I also have something totally off subject. The front driver side strut mount bearing needs to be replaced on this 01 cavalier. Will any aftermarket bearing kit work in the stock mount or will they only work in that brands mount? I'd hate to buy a whole mount since I think it's just the bearing.

Thanks a bunch!

strut mounts are one piece (for the most part). they only sell the whole mount, about 45 bucks at the store.

ALL Cavalier and Sunfires 95-99 DO NOT HAVE PASSLOCK!!!!

Only 96-99 cavaliers and sunfires have passlock....

PASSLOCK WAS NOT PUT IN THE 95's DUE TO BUGS

I installed the PXR bypass from Code Alarm that was in a bin at my work with a bunch of other old @!#$ in it, and it was so much easier to install then the 555L. And a new one is about $35 rather then $80.

what exactly does the bypass do?? i have an remotre start alarm on my car that would stay on for more than 1 or 2 seconds...so somebody told me to buy a bypass module..im waiting on that to get to me in the mail to see if that fixes the problem...also on the alarm where the HE LL do you install the alternator (generator) cable too??? pictures would be nice..

also when i tried to turn my car on using the alarm it would turn on for 1 second and then shut off....but when i tried to turn it on using the key it would not do anything...not even crank...is this normal...??? can i turn my car on only using the remote start now??

When you started with the remote, the anti-theft kicked in and shut off the engine again. You have to wait ten minutes before you can try again, this time using your key.
