can my car get stolen?
Wednesday, September 21, 2005 12:43 PM
I have read on the GM sites and in the manual that we have the PASS lock system but I was just wondering is there still a way someone can steal it? Who would want to steal a cavalier though, lol.

is it steal proof? that depends...does it have the engine taken out, no wheels on it and a 4 inch thick chain strapping it to a light pole?

I deffinately agree with that, nothing is "unstealable". Ferrari's get stolen, and I'm willing to bet their theft deterent systems are more involved then a J-body.

I'm gonna guess and say that it requires the key to be used to start the car. So if someone were to yank the ignition cylinder out, car no start. Again guessing that it would be a kindergarten version of the keys that have those microchips in 'em.

when i had my 98 bu(malibu) the car oftentimes thought i was stealing the car when i put in my keys lol...what i mean is the model of that year, the anti-theft therrent had a glitch in the ignition and the passlock 2, so if the ignition keys were put in slightly off or the molding on the key was even slightly worn-*BAM anti-theft-therrent kicks in and the car stalls and one can't start the car for another 15min. uess how many times i had that happen to me?
that was poor car research on my end, plus the engine was crappy for its year. ugh
at least i put some research in getting what i have now(just some minor issues i gotta sort out, nothing major yet)

passlock is a code that is inputted when your key is inserted into the ignition. its located on your ignition cylinder. once the is inserted it will allow your car to start if its gives the right code.

Well ill try to explain how passlock works simply. Our keys are made of a certain metal. It has specific magnetic and conductive propertys. When you put the key the ignition and turn it over it sends a message to a processer that tells the car its ok to start. So if you were to bust out the ignition and try to use a screwdriver to start the car it wouldnt work. But there are ways around passlock (Hence the possibility of remote starters). You need a module and have to do a BUNCH or wireing. While it is possible to steal our cars its alot easier to just go steal an older chrysler cuz they have no anit-theft systems Pre-00.

Personaly, I think the top 10 thing is a numbers game more than anything. Go look in a parking lot. How many cavi do you see compaired to something like a vett. Some one who would be likely to steal a cavi wants an easy job. A vett on the other hand will be more likely be a pro.

plus if the person trying to steal your car happens to own a cavi or knows someone who does it might just be easier. that's all i will go on to say about that.

I locked my keys up in my car one day, so what i did was got a piece of wood that was laying on the ground stuck in my doors key hole & turned it real hard and the door popped open, so i don't think gm made the car safe.
