I was looking at Best Buy at radar detectors, and i noticed the cobra series. I do use the highway some of the time but i am mostly in the city, what would be a good radar detector. I am only looking at spending about $120 on a detector. Also, how would i hook it up to my car, i have no cigaritte lighter, i replaced with an aftermarket tach. Thanks for your help.

well depending on where you live it is pointless to use it in the city
here in PA the local cops catn use radar, only the staties on the highway, so check that out b4 you spend any money
I have one and theres been alot of times it just doesnt pick up at all, like those signs telling you how fast your going, doesnt even pick them up

My cigarette lighter on my 98Z doesn't power my cobra detector....i was pissed, so now im trying to find a spot to hardwire it to.

Also: when i go into chi-town (maybe once a month since i live 150miles south of there) its fairly pointless because it never shuts off even in city mode. because of the automoatic sliding doors and such set it off.
i had an older cobra ans just recently purchased the 9700 series from cobra ( looks better goes more with interior and has better range etc. I havent got a ticket in 4 years. Knock on wood. and yes it does work. well in texas it does. just dont go and buy one from wal mart. get one from a reputable company like: valentine, cobra, escort..etc.
my cobra, well radioshack, but its cobra internals
goes off when i pass VMS (variable message signs) on the highway, and since PA likes to put them EVERYWHERE my detector is pretty much useless, cept on the turnpike, not as many signs
i have an old 6 band cobra and it still works like a charm. picked it up for $35 about 3 years ago. kept me from getting a couple tickets. the 3 speeding tickets i have gotten have come when i forgot to turn the damn thing on.

do a search for this brand on google. Rated the best brand on the market.

New Picture comming this summer.
Both Beltronics and Escort are owned by the same person - R. Greg Blair (founder of Escort). The Escort Passport 8500 X50, Bel RX65 and Valentine 1 are the best out there are, but they'll set you back ALOT more than $120. I absolutely love my 8500 - it hardly ever falses, and I can program the detector to ignore the frequencies of that would make it false (motion-detectors (auto doors) and garage doors). The detection range of the 8500 is amazing as well - I've had it go full red on cops who were at least 4 miles away (on highway 1 going east of calgary (fairly flat and straight)). In comparison, my old whistler 1670 could pick up cops at around 2 miles on flat road, and it didn't go full red until they were about 1/2-3/4 mile away.
If you're looking for good, relatively inexpensive detectors you should take a look at the Whistler Pro73 and Bel RX55 as well as the Cobras. They got wicked reviews and can be had for under $150US, maybe even $120 on sale.
If you want to see how different detectors at different price levels stacked up against each other, check this site out:

They only have 1 Cobra detector in the test, but it might help in your decision.

i as well love my passport 8500 x50 but it pricey but well worth it
Anyone ever use this detector before, looks really nice I like how it can go in the guage pod.

just wondering if its worth the money or not.
bell and escorts are rated at the top and have for a couple of years. valentines are about five bills. if you don't want to spend a lot ofmoney on a detector then get bells midrange or escorts midrange detector.
when i got my valentine it was only about 400.....good deal because it saved my ass a few times, easily would have had over a grand in tickets.

Just wanna add something in there. I had extraordinarily bad experience with the Escort Solo (not the solo 2). I had 2 different detectors completely f#$k up on me (they would go off every 3 seconds, even if I was 20 miles from the nearest anything). The only reason I got my 8500 x50 was because of my horrible luck with the solos (I think it was also around $400 after everything was said and done). I'm sure that the other escort mid-level detectors are great, but avoid the solos like the plague. The new solo 2s are supposed to be great, but don't touch the solo 1s.
From what I've experienced and read, the 8500 x50, Bel Rx65 and Valentine 1 are all equally wicked detectors. All are expensive, but worth it if you can afford them. Nothing wrong with Whistler, either IMO.
i bought a 8500 and i lkie it. sometimes there are alot of flase alarms. but you get what you pay for. dont buy a 40 one. if you dont have a cig lighter buy a solo sr7 i think. it is battery. spend a ton of money like over 1200 and buy a full car system. or get a radar jammer.
