Why the hell wont my AMP PROTECTION LIGHT GO OFF??
Friday, September 02, 2005 12:22 AM
well i just got a new indash dvd player.. and i installed it yesterday everything worked great.. well today my subs stop hitting so i assumed i knocked the ground lose like always.. anyways i didnt and the protection light is on and will not go off.. all fuses are good.. 2 on the amp and the one to the battery.. could the ant. lead cause this?.. i doubt it because it turns the red light on when i turn on the deck.. ive taken it off and turned it back on when i put the ground back on it gets like lttle power and then dies and of course the red protection light goes on.. so the 12v+ is good.. the ground seems to be good.. all 4 gauge.. the amp lead.. possibly? since its behind deck and i havent checked also possibly rca's i have no idea but its buggin the helll out of me is my amp like totally blown? i dont get why it wont go off.. thanx

ok well i tried some things
unhooking rca's from amp one by one..
unhooked the speakers from the amp
when i touch the ground to the amp it just goes right to the red light..ive tried 2 diff. grounds
is there a way i could test my amp lead without taking out m ywhole deck and that headache again??
even when i take the ground OFF the red lights remains.. until i turn off the deck how is it possible for the amp to even have a LED on with no ground?.. it something grounding out somewhere? i have no idea where it could be
any help is apperciated hopefully b4 i go to the beach in the morning

If the Amp is stil getting power when the ground is removed, then it is grounding through another way. Is the amp bolted directly to metal? If so it could be grounding through it's chassis. Check the remote wire all the way back. From the description you've given it sounds as if either the remote or power wire is touching some bare metal somewhere and grounding out and the amp is using that as it's ground. Because of the small gauge of the remote wire, it probably is not getting enough power to run so it's switching over to protection mode. I would run a small wire from the fuse box to the remote and see if that fixes it. If it does you'll have to take the dash apart to find where the remote from the headunit is grounding out.

I'm gonna say you either are grounding the amp out somehow, or it's fried. Have you tried putting it in another car?

well i ran ALL new remote wire.. tok off rca's and speaker wires.. the 12x from battery is obviously fine since it has an inline fuse that is good.. anyway if i connect it with the ground the red LED comes out but if i take off ground it STAYS on.. so i dont know wheres its getting power to run the LED from??? when i take off remote wire the led goes back on.. im stuck i dont know wut the hell to do..

ok so i took the amp completly out.. hooked it up straight to the battery. and STILL RED LIGHT COMES OUT.. i was going to try to replace the 2 fuses that r on the amp but there not blown so unlikely that its that i guess my amp just took a @!#$

Maybe, my two X-treme 600W amps wouldnt come out of protection mode when they finally died. They still got power, the protection LED was always on though. If the REM wire was the problem, the amp wouldnt even be on, and if the power wire was grounded out somewhere, then same thing (likely) Could be temperature protection, if it feels warm (my first X-treme amp was wayyyyy too hot to touch when it died, ran two diff ohmages; 4ohm 6x9's and 8ohm subs)

But I always have at least 2 amps now, one as my main, the other as a backup (cuz I need my tunes maaan) Good luck

Yup, that's a pretty good sign your amp has gone to the graveyard. Sorry man.

But hey, look at the brightside, you can now buy a new amp.

well i9m sure it can be replaced i obviously blew something in there ay idea what it mite be i know a good electronics guy he should let me know wuts up its not even that old like 4 months i better not have to buy a damn new one any idea what inside the actual amp gets fried? and yes my ground came lose alot i could of shorted it possibly who knows

I'm no electronics guy but if something's fried, you'll see it. My mom's video card boiled (literally) to the point where the silicon was bubbly and beyond repair. The guy at the pawn shop swapped the cards.

Check to see if you have a wire thread roaming somewhere to cause something touching the opposite polarity. When I fried my first amp I smelled smoke and actually saw/heard it frying. Sounded like eggs cooking. I am not saying that if the amp was always shorting it mau have just shorted out entirely causing this to happen.

.

JVC KD-SX8350, Powerbass 6x9's rear, have to find some decent 4" front speakers,
Two Solobarics 12L5 powered by a Legacy LA2070 (1200x2 max).
Soundstorm F100.4 powering the interior speakers.
Now it's time for engine work.

Your amp is toast. buy another amplifier and find a ground that doesn't come off... constant short and voltage spikes are not good on electronics that are set to operate within a set current range. even if you have a good fuse it doesn't mean that it didn't let more current than it's value through... I've seen it happen all the time.

yea ill have to make sure my ground doesnt come off this time everytime i would have to make a hard stop or anything it would come unhooked because it was just long enough to reach and the weigh of the box with the amp attached would yank it off..

how did your ground keep comming off, did it come off of where you grounded it to the body, or from the amp terminal?? Either way i hope that you are suing the correct connectors for it instead of just screwing down bare wire to a flat screw terminal.
