smaller box...higher spl wtf!!?

Well i went to the local stereo shop and got thenm to work out a few box designs for me for my fusion 15"sub..for some reason that sub from what i have seen and what he showed me on the program will play better in a smaller ported box then a large one....I right now have a 3.6internal cuft box with it tuned to 32htz..now we tried to tune it higher with the same volume but the port was just too big to fit and the gain was minimal..now i tried goign with a 2.5cuft box with a bigger port...2.5" x 21" x 15.5" and it is tuned to 40htz and it says it will play alot louder then the klarger box will..totally differnt then the normal everyone says and thats what the guy says is that these subs like a smaller ported enclosre. The tuning frequency will still play down to 32 htz and i think it peaks at about 36htz and tapers off to about 77htz..but its all very nice a level through that field with only a 1.5db drop in sound...does that sound right and why the hell is it so differnt?phil

just because that's what some program says doesn't mean that's how it's going to perform in your vehicle.

once the box goes in the car...all those numbers change and you can just throw em out the window.

Most of the programs that plot the graphs are based in a free environment.. ie out side in a field with nothing to bounce off of. Once you put an enclosure in a car you get waves bouncing all over the place due to the weird angles on top of that you get cancellation, and reflection off of a bunch of different surfaces. I had a similar issue to what you had. 2.0cu-ft box with 24 sq inchs of port @32 Hz was about 8 dbs louder than a 4.0 cu-ft box with 48sq-in of port @ 32Hz. It all depends on what the woofer likes some like small enclosures some like large ones the only way to find out is to experiment with what works in your application. I'm working on my 7th box right now for my Brahma trying to find something that will give me the number I'm looking for. Some of the boxes i gained some lost. but each one i Built i learned something from. So just experiment with your system till you find something you like.
