i have a 2001 z24. 1 15" dual 2ohm re xxx using 1 re 12.1 amp. and hitting 140db on term lab mic. if i would get a second re 12.1 amp how much db would i gain ruffly... if so how would you recommend running the 2 amps wit this sub.

you'd probably gain a few db...but it really depends on the enclosure.

I would suggest doing some testing and come up with a better box instead of dropping more cash for another amp. you could do a lot better with what you already have.

what box are they in now?

the sub is in a ported 4 ftcu box firing into the cab. not sealed off yet bc we are messing with the stereo's sound quality.

specs of equipment:

1 - 15" re xxx dual 2 ohm
1 - re 12.1 amp
1 - optima red top up front
1 - optima yellow top in the rear
1 - alpine 9830 head unit
1 - kicker 650 x 4 amp
1 - 6.5 kicker coponents
1 - 5.25 " "
1 - 1 farad power cap

0 gauge all the way back to trunk then drops to 4 gauge for amps.

trunk is fully dynomated.

well it's not sealed off..and it's facing the cabin. that's why you aren't getting higher numbers.

what's it tuned too? how much port area?

of what i can measure port is slotted so i cant tell u whats inside the box.

its 3 wide 14.5" high 19.5 length

tune it higher..and add some more port area.

i'd go with probably 50-75sq' in' of port area at least.

how do i build the box to certain freq? also what freq would you recommend keep in mind that the stereo is daily driver and still competing for sq. or just make seperate boxes for sq and spl? what box dimensions would you use to make the box? im open to all suggestions....

tuning relies on three factors. airspace/port length/port area.

you change one of those and the tuning changes also.

http://www.accelerator-pedal.com/ported-box.asp
use that and you can plan out a new box.

You need a H.O. alternator. I'm sure if you check your voltage, you are getting serious voltage drop with that amount of amperage you are running. Adding a second 12.1 won't help that situation. Also facing the box forward without sealing off the trunk is kuilling your score.

what freq would you tune it to?

Re: re xxx 15"

with it being a daily driver...you shouldn't tune it TOO high

normally you get a higher score by tuning it higher (45 hz and up)
but that sacrifices it for being used daily

tune it to the high 30's..38 maybe.

you could even make a "port plug" so you can make different sized ports to swap in for daily or competition use.

well ill just make a box for pure spl.. and have a sq box. so for the spl box what freq would be best.

what should i put in the box for net box volume??? re recommends 4cuft

http://www.bladeice.com/resfreq.htm

that explains somewhat how to tune for spl

lol, you shall find out quickly that: our cars and boxes larger then 3.5cf are not exactly ideal for "swapping" enclosures in and out. My box that was only 3.0cf after port/sub displacements had to be partially constructed in the trunk. Only way it is coming out will be....total destruction =[

i have a 4cuft box in my trunk and i bulit the box outside of the car

Re: re xxx 15

My box is 4.5cuft net (5.5gross) and I also built it outside the car. I still have room for a set of golf clubs or cubes of beer. Could have easily built it 1-1.5 cubes bigger and it would have still fit through the front without taking the front seats out. A guy on here (JB) has a 9cuft box (internal) in a sunfire, but it used his entire trunk) for 2 tens. From the looks of his pics, it was in one piece when it went in.

Your not going to gain much because you still have the same impedance subs. You will basicly be getting the same amount of power. Unless there strappable but you will still be running the risk of blowing them seeing as each amp will see around .5ohm each when strapped @1ohm

Theoretically (in an ideal world), if you double the power you will gain 3dB. Cars, however, don't represent an ideal world.

With a dual-2ohm sub you would only be putting 1400wrms into it with 2 amps (according to the specs on the 12.1, you can't run them linked at 1ohm). You're already putting 1200 into it with 1 amp, so you might gain a few tenths of a dB by adding the second amp. Save your money and try other ways to gain dB, like changing enclosure volume and tuning.

He could strap them @1ohm because with IR and what not it will still be around 2ohms depending on the box. But he could still run the risk of blowing them.
