saw on the highway today a 2000+ cav that someone had changed the turn signal to use the reverse light on one side. thought this was wierd, how would this be done in wiring?
I would imagine that all you would have to do is pull the wire that gets power when your indicator is on and splice it into the rev. light. It should blink than. I don't know if it would screw anything up if you put your car in reverse with it hooked up this way...but all you have to do to make sure is just put a diode on the indicator wire so as to not get any reverse current back through the indicator circuit...Just to be safe.
BTW yeah I think thats a cool little mod too. Something different...OR this guy just really screwed up something and we just think he modded it and made something cool.
should be pretty easy...but why to make them look like the front?
Or you could cut your rev lights power wire and just use them as indicators. As, on second thought, I belive rev lights are ran in parallel..meaning that if one comes on they both come on. That way if one blows the other can still work fine. you could get both systems to work if you use two diodes on each side. Let me know how much you know about diodes . If you need to just drop me an e-mail and i'll send you a diagram of how it "should" work.
i actually like this idea
you could jsut fit the same forn t signals as teh rears and make them red or orange
/me gives an evil laugh and think about doing it
there's a writeup on a clubs site.
I believe you modify the directions for the Toyota Tails a little. With that method, you have to clip a wire in the steering column to de-link the turns/brakes and then do a little rewiring in the back. "Mike Z aka Sneezy" on here has the mod done. You may also be able to use the diode method, but you def cannot hook it up directly - I tried it just to see what would happen... Turning on one flasher makes ALL the lights in the back flash hahahahah. It was kinda funny watching outers/inners/third-brake all flashing in unision.
On second thought, the rear bulbs are 3157 - dual filament. If you could find a pre-wired 3157 harness that has wires sticking out for the other filament (only one is used for back-up) than you could wire up the second filament for turns... I would look into that myself, but I removed the harnesses completely and hard-wired blue LED's in the back-ups and some time now the inners will be shaved off anyway.
I did this over 3 years ago and it's pretty easy if you just concentrate of what you're doing. First, disconnect the brake wire in the steering column so only the turn signals work. Next, cut the turn signal wire on each outer (sorry, I don't remember what color each were) and cut the reverse light wire. Get some wire (I think it was 16 gauge, I really can't remember) and extend the turn signal wire and connect it to the cut end of the existing reverse wire (using butt connectors of course) Finally, tap in to the third brake light wire and run wires to each side and connect to the "old" cut turn signal wire.
^^^ That's exactly what I was thinking but I wasn't positive so I didn't say it. If I remember correctly, the wire in the steering column is gray correct? Or was it the black one... hmm
why wopuld you have to cut the wire in the column?
couldnt you just have it flash too??....though i aggree it would look better if it didnt
Yea, the wire in the column links them. If you cut the harness of the back-up lights and use the bulbs ONLY for turn signals, than you don't have to cut the wire in the column. However, the problem with not cutting the column wire, and not cutting the back-up lights is that all five (O-I-3rd-I-O) lights would then flash with your method. Diodes may solve that problem as well, but do you really need both lights flashing as turns and being brake lights??
