HELP: SONY eXplode amp overheating :(
Sunday, August 14, 2005 8:14 PM
I"ve got 500W SONY eXplode amp (4-channel) and running 2 stock front 4x6's and rear Infinity 6x9's. The protector light comes up after I turn up the volume or add more bass. I checked the wiring and it's all fine, polarity is fine as well. The 6x9's I'm running are 4 ohms and in the amp's manual it says that I should run 2 ohms minimun....Could that be my problem or I just should get another amp? The whole setup had been working for 4 months and amp started overheating about 2 weeks ago. Please help!

Try disconnecting 2 speakers from it and then try it running in 2 channel mode. I need more details like the model number and your ground/ positive cables size (the gauge) etc etc. I am guessing a tiny heatsink on one of the small chips inside the amp has a bad paste job. I just had my friends colossus repaired and I could pick out the horrible chinese worksmanship all over it.

Yeah, I know that SONY stuff sucks balls. So, could you guys recommend any other amps? I looking for a 4 channel amp, not too expensive, and pretty reliable, 50+ watts per channel. Any suggestions?

I picked up my Planet Audio amp for 280 $, puts out 100w @ 4ohm x 4. Fantastic gear, excellent price. You can see it in my cardomain profile if you need a look, it is last years model as well.

Yeah, I have a good ground, and all other wires are fine. I think the amp just isn't any good, in other words P.O.S. (Piece Of $hit)

the amp will run less hot at 4 ohm then it will at 2 ohms. i think what you are reading in the manual is saying do not run the amp below 2 ohms. where is the amp mounted. chances are its just not getting enough fresh air, placement of the amp could effect that allot.

I'm going to get Legacy 400W LA 290 4 channel amp.
Are these Legacy things any good or it'll die on me like this Sony eXplode one?
