System still cutting out w/ 180A alt
Sunday, August 07, 2005 8:33 PM
I recently got a 180A alternator and a orion 1200d. In the process i also upgraded the big three. When the bass hits really hard the stereo music cuts out (i can't even adjust the volume on the stereo at when the subs cut out).

I'm wondering i need a better battery, or if it might be that i have the orion wired at 1ohm, and it's got a protection circuit?

Any advice would be helpful, i'd love to not have to worry about my system cutting out.

Cutting out, as in the amp and the headunit shut off? I'm not sure about the orion, but a lot of amps have a shut-down if the load is too much, as well as a thermal shut-down.

I'll have to take a look at the amp and see it if actually turns off... but it definitely stops playing sound.

Should 1 batter be sufficient for 1000 watts? I'm just wondering if this is a power problem, or if it's happening because the amp is being run outside it's standard operating range.

so the amp isnt stable at 1 ohm, and your running it at 1 ohm?

are u running it 1 ohm stereo or 1 ohm mono?

does the power to the amp cut off or just the sound?

does the sound cut off to the subs? or just the highs?

is your highs powered from your headunit or another amp?

Yeah, i'm running it 1 ohm and it's not supposed to, although another Org member said they had a 1200d running at 1 ohm and no problems. I'm getting another 1200d later this week, or early next week. I'm going to install that and run each at 2 ohms, and we'll see if the same thing happens. I'll post again if it does, and i'll have answers to your questions too. Thanks for the help so far, hopefully i can get this figured out.

you should be able to run the amp at 1 ohm

Im pretty sure that mine is doing the exact same thing as yours is, like when you turn it up to loud and the bass hits everything will shut off and then start back up again. Some people have told me that I need a bigger power wire.

Double check your connections... Make sure the ground wire is on a clean, unpainted surface- and its tight.

also one of your subs could be bad and is causing the amp to go into protect. Check out your subs make sure you dont have a burnt voice coil.

Make sure you're not running lower than 1 ohm. How many subs do you have and how are they wired.

you said you cant adjust your volume when it cuts out..... just like mine..... your headunit is shutting off because your drawing more power to the headunit than the stock wire can handle, coupled with the power loss of the huge bass hit. just run a bigger gauge fused wire from your constant +12 on your HU to your battery. should fix it since your problem sounds similar to mine.

rouenacanoe: i was wondering about that, i'm going to give that a shot. Did doing that fix yours? Also, what gauge wired did you go with?

For others: I was wrong, i'm running it at 1/2 ohm, which an org member said he is also doing.

first thing you should do...is measure the voltage while this happens. if it drops WAY down..then you have a power supply problem.

Would putting a multi-meter between the amp and power wire be sufficient to test that?

im not positive at the gauge, but i just used some wire i had laying around that was roughly twice the size as the stock power... and yes it did fix mine.

So just put a probe at the power and the ground of the amp, correct?

If i get a volt gauge, do most people put those across their battery or their amps?
