Second cigarette lighter

Hello, I'm looking to wire a second cigarette lighter behind the dash and I would like for it to only be powered when the key is in the ignition, unlike the factory lighter. In another post, someone suggested that I use a relay using the ACC wire on the HU as the trigger. I'm hopping someone could give me some instructions on how to do this. Thanks all!

For the relay, here's an example as to how to wire up the relay.

There will be a couple of small changes however: the switch is optional, you could tap the power wire from the existing cig lighter socket rather than the battery (fuse is mandatory), indicator is optional, the trigger wire comes from the ACC power on the radio (a 3M Quik-Splice will work for this one), and the item powered would be the second cig lighter.

As long as you are splicing into the wires for the relay and not cutting (at least for the trigger/power) it's all good.

Basically, it would look like this:

Thanks again for the reply. I passed by my local Radio Shack and all they had was aa 5-AMP DPDT relay and 5, 10 and 30 amp fuse holders - no 20, would these do? or am i stuck looking? Thanks

I'd stick with a SPST relay. That can be picked up from a local auto parts store. Just go in and ask for a Bosch SPST 5 pin relay. If they look confused, then say its needed as a replacement for a fuel pump relay .

The fuse holders also can be obtained from the local auto parts. In the electrical section. You can either get the blade type or glass fuse type. Your choice.

As for the relay socket, that's a bit harder to find, so since it's going on the interior of your car, also in the electrical section get some female blade connectors and when the relay gets hooked up, just slide those on the pins.

You're looking at around $10 - 15.
