HELP, Dealer try to snow me?
Friday, August 05, 2005 9:29 PM
Bear with me I have to lay some ground work before I can explain the situation:
(If you like, skip to the questions at the bottom)

I have an 05 LS Sport, with the RDS stereo (CD, 18 presets(12 fm, 6am), the scrolling info) as far as I know it is the 2nd best factory unit next to the XM system.

Now my previous 01 z-24 had the exact same system, but it also had the cassette tape deck with the CD, and all the other functions. So I thought they were the same.

SITUATION: I bought my car NEW.

1) The stereo will sometimes juggle presets, or even delete some of my presets and other presets are in their places. (this is easily recognizeable as all my presets run in ascending order).
2) If I am listening to a CD and stop at a store just to get gas, when I start the car again the CD player resets itself to track 1, regardless of what track it was on when I shut it off.

3) THIS IS THE WEIRD ONE, (Understand I have kids and will sometimes start the car to heat or cool it prior to going somewhere, with two keyless entry fobs I can have it running and not have to worry about someone taking it.)
That being said, When I unlock the car with the remote the stereo will turn on, and I know for sure when I start my car to cool or heat it I turn off all other accessories, habit!)

NOTE: The problems do not alway occur just occasionally like once every 2-3 days.
PROBLEM:

They have replaced my stereo THREE TIMES, four total counting the factory original. They now say they will NOT replace it until I can duplicate the problems for them, because it won't do it for them when they have it in to diagnose. They have had it three times since they decided not to replace another stereo.

Aug 4, 2005, I finally figure out a way to get the stereo to turn on almost every time with the key fob. So I call my salesman, He and a General Manager meet me after I got off work out front at the dealership , and I demonstrated the situation for them twice. So I explain the following action to the two of them:

CHECK THIS OUT: A few days ago when I was in with their "TOP" Electronics technician trying to explain this same situation and at the time I had not figure out how to make it happen, and of course it would not do it for him, He in a very demeaning tone TOLD ME that it was impossible because they are on two completely seperate circuits and it just could NOT happen.

The G.M. told me to come back friday to meet with him and the Service Manager to demonstrate the problem to him.

TODAY AUGUST 5 2005. I go in after work meet with these two "Managers". The demonstration works, and NOW, the Service Manager is telling me that it may be normal operations in this style system, or the problem might be somewhere other than the head unit, and he would have to get back to me after making some calls next week.

I got alittle bent because this has been an ongoing thing since I bought the car in Oct 04, and proceeded to tell him that I never had any of these problems with the stereo in my 2001 Z-24, with what I thought was basically the same stereo, and THEN he told me that they look identical but GM changed their contracted manufacturer for the later cars.

QUESTIONS:
1) Has any one else ever had similar problems with their factory units, prefer info on the RDS system?

2) Does anyone know if the stereo is suppose to be on a completely different circuit than the stereo, therefor making this phenomenon a very isolated incident, OR was the Technician trying to talk S#!+ to me??

3)Does anyone know if GM change their supplier of the guts only with these stereos, because the exterior looks identical???

4) DOES ANYONE THINK I CAN POUR THIS S.O.B. INTO A TALL GLASS, ADD ICE, ADD WATER, MAYBE ALITTLE SUGAR AND SERVE THESE LYING R@+ B@S+@%!)S A NICE TALL LEMONADE???????????

If you have proof of any kind in helping me with these problems that they are dancing around please include the source.

THANK YOU for all your help!!!

Sorry this was crazy-long!

Since just about everything is computer driven now, I'd be willing to bet the BCM is screwy. Here at Saturn, they can cause all kinds of crazy stuff to happen. We replace alot of them.

I can't follow all those problems, but the stereo stores settings separately for each key fob. Meaning if you unlock it with one fob then the stereo will have the volume set to the last setting used for that fob. if you use the other one it will use the last volume setting and presets for that fob.

I've never had the car on and used the other fob to see if the presets would change.

Don't know if that's your problem, but maybe it's worth looking into.

thats a real toughie, john lenko will prob have to be the end-all be-all to this one. i think its possible, but about changing contractors, i doubt it. they've been usin delphi for their main electronics for years. my 02 LS stock radio is a delphi..

the BCM idea, is a good one.

I would just replace it with an aftermarket deck and be done with it.

1. Sounds like the personalization feature gone wrong, or you're swapping between the two keyfobs. Each remote has its own settings. If you're going from one to the other, that's the problem right there... not the car. If not, then the Body Control Module is messed up.

2. Your question doesn't make sense. Stereo on different circuit from the what?

3. Delphi's been the supplier since before I was born.. so they're full of @!#$.

No, Delphi is more recent, it used to be AC DELCO.

As far as the stereo turning on when you unlock the door, it sounds like your RAP system is screwy, (retained accessory power) and if I am right, that is controlled by the BCM.

Have they replaced the BCM yet?

And how did you get such a loaded Cavalier with ONSTAR, but not XM anyway? I have XM in mine, but no ONSTAR....

Labotomi: That is a very interesting point that I was not aware of. However that does not explain the other problems, But I will pose that to the dealership. Thank you.

To the comments regarding putting in an aftermarket: That is my intention, However, If I still have these problems once the aftermarket head unit is installed (flip out DVD...intended), then the dealership will not even look at it because it will no longer be the ORIGINAL FACTORY EQUIPMENT. This is what I am trying to avoid.

LENKO: I am sorry, the question should read: Does anyone know if the stereo is supposed to be on a completely different circuit than the ignition-key fob remote unit?
It was a very long post and I was just worn out
Oh, and Lenko, RE: Delphi being the stereo supplier, Do you have a source that I could use to put in their faces when I call B.S. on their @$$e$.

Toaster55: They have not replace anything but the stereo 3 times, not the BCM.

And as far as the options on my car, I don't know how all that works, but they were trying to make deals, and they got me EXACTLY what I wanted (minus the gremlins that live in my stereo), color, stick, pwr sunroof, etc.etc...

And to all of the replies: thanks for even reading that mess, I just re-read it and realize I should not have written it so late.

Keep the info coming, and please respond to the mixed up question LENKO.

Thanks again to the

Ok.. Delphi has been doing stuff since 2000 model year for sure... all the Class 2 stuff is Delphi... but I believe Delphi is a new name for an older company.. I'll have to ask a buddy of mine whose Dad works for them.

Keyless entry is controlled by the BCM. The BCM tells the parts of the car to turn on and off... so technically, they're on the same data line... the BCM speaks and the radio listens. When you unlock the car with one keyfob, it sends personalization data to the radio... when you turn off the car, the BCM doesn't tell the radio to turn off until the door is opened, or 10 minutes is up.

As for a source... it's not going to change the fact that they're stupid. If they don't know where the stuff comes from already, they're not going to care if you throw it in their faces.

Try another dealership, I'd say.

Lenko: Thanks, and I'm sure you are correct, they just don't want to deal with the problems. I'll see if they get back to me this week, like they said. Then I'll check out the Dealer closer to my job.

Thanks again,
cya

An aftermarket deck would not communicate with your BCM...
It would be its own little system...

All it needs is power, ground and ign. and some damn speaker wires to work... So if every problem you are having is stemming from your radio being farked up, then just replace it- and that will be it.... No BCMS, no crazy radio stations resetting etc..

I would get them to install another brand new radio, then sell it on Ebay.. BRAND NEW!!! It would definately net you some bucks.

Getting an aftermarket system would fix his radio problem, but if the bcm is screwin up for the radio wouldn't it screw up for some of the other stuff too? I would get the bcm checked out before getting the aftermarket system.
