Components install pics?

Grabbed a set of JL Audio VR600CS components, looking for ideas on where to mount them. I currently have pioneer coaxials in the door with tweeters mounted near the handle, but I'm looking for something better sound & appearance wise. Kickpanels are out of the question.

Also, where did you put your crossovers? I'm looking to get the nicest possible looks out of my quite basic install. Nothing flashy, just pro looks.

Cheers,

Guillaume

Do you plan on using a outboard amp to run the components ? IF" so then may I suggest mounting the chrossovers in the door. If you are doig such as suggested by the other members then mount it in the trunk by the amp. If you need suggestions on mounting the tweeter then take a look at what I worked out with my installer.

Imaging is fantastic as well (like kick panals). I also have mine just running off my HU for now until I can get more gear into my car next year. They sound good, but they are no where near the potential.

JUST a correction on my last post, mount the chrossovers in the trunk if a outboard amp will be powering them, if you have the deck powering them, etc then just use the door and mount them inside. I have mine mounted on a woodcutout peice inside the dorr which itself is fastned to the door itself.

Thanks for the pics Shorthand. I currently have my tweeter mounted EXACTLY where you have yours mounted, except I did not measure correctly for the passenger side and with the door closed, the dash hides half of the tweeter

I may stick to this setup if I can't find a decent way to fix the holes I made when installing the tweeters. Any suggestions?

In the worst case, how much is a cavalier door panel, stock? Would junkyard be much much cheeper?

Wow, very nice BumMrz!!!

You seem to have some pretty darn cool seats too!!!

You fiberglassed the door panel then covered it in leather, right?

And why would it matter wether they are in the door or in the trunk? the wire STILL has to travel the same length either way.

anyways..here's mine

i love where mine are mounted, sounds great and everyone asks if they are stock lol..
in that last pic the door is cracked open, when its closed they fit perfectly in that little area lol
the mids are mounted in the 4x6 location..

I mounted my tweeters in the same place short hand did. I used the angled cup though. I also mounted the crossovers inside the door panel. They sit between the door handle and where the tweeter is mounted on a piece running straight up and down.

GBro,

I have (older) JL VR600's too, with the same setup as your Pioneers (tweeter near handle, mid in factory 4X6 spot). I definitely do not get enough mid bass (unless I stick my head down below my steering wheel, that is) and the tweeters aren't blending very well. I have been trying to come up with a good way to solve this too. Let us know what you come up with!

Oh, and my crossovers are behind the door panels (they aren't very showy), but not secured very well. A plus for putting the crossovers closer to the speakers is using less speaker wire overall.

Keith: I'll let you know for sure if I come up with a solution.

For the midbass though, you may want to check that the midbass driver fits FLUSH against the door panel, and that there are absolutely no gap; otherwise you will get very weak midbass, like you're experiencing now because of 1) soundwaves cancelling and 2) no "chamber" behind the speaker. I had the verysame problem before, it got much much better after I made a MDF adapter.

As for the 1.25" tweeter holes in my door panels, anyone knows how I could hide them?

GBro,

I have a PVC adapter behind the mids so they are sealed well against the door. When I put my ear in line with the speaker, it sounds MUCH better. So - I think the problem lies in the location of the factory speaker hole AND it's angle (which is away from the listener's ear).

We need to find a good location for the mids, and then put the tweeters wherever they blend best.

Keith: Totally agree with you, plus with the 2doors Cavy, the rear speakers are much higher and closer to the ears of the driver than the front ones, which is why I've been struggling to get good front stage imaging in this car for quite a long time - I really hope that I will be able to fix this with the JL Audio components. Kickpanels sound like they would be the solution., but I can't decide myself to spend 150$USD on plastic pods.

You said that you have the VR600 right? Where did you get your adapter? I can't find any for 6" speakrs, only 5.25 or 6.5. Are you using a 6.5 that fits?

Thanks,

G

GBro,

I had kickpanels in my 89 Z24 with the JL's in them and I didn't like them very much. Sure, they directed the sound more to my ears, but they were open in the back and didn't give any reinforcement for the lower frequencies. Also, I tried mounting the tweeter in the kick panel, only to later drill it into the in-dash speaker grills, leaving a big hole in the kick panels. AND, people would often kick them when they got in the car. My grandfather insisted on resting his foot right on the speaker grill even on wet, snowy days! That's my experience with kick panels.

Yes I have the VR600cs. They are a bit older (I bought them back around 2000 or 2001.) I bought both the adapters and spacers (which I didn't use) from this site:
http://www.mjmautoinnovations.com/saksct65.htm

They say they are for 6.5" speakers, but mine fit right in. (I'm sure I have the 6" set - don't worry. I remember the model number, and I remember having arguments with a car audio guy about it.) They screw right into the factory holes - I used the screws from the factory speakers. Sure, I could have done the MDF thing, (like I did with my Type-R 6X9's) but I'm very happy with these adapters. I did have to notch them out at the speaker terminals, though. No big deal.

Sry this is so long but what do you think about this: I have been thinking about uncovering the 6X9's in the back to hear the high frequencies better. (It sounds so much better without the "package tray" in.) But my speakers are not centered in the rear deck, and I would have to remove the child seat hardware AND somehow accomodate the middle seatbelt AND recover the tray. Any thoughts?
