amps, subs, wiring, channels, ohms....Q's ?
Friday, August 05, 2005 9:13 PM
In general, can anyone explain to me how bridging and wiring series/parallel affects ohms, etc.?

Also some specific questions.....Can you power two 4ohm subs with a one channel class D amp that is 4 ohm, 2 ohm, and 1 ohm stable?

....And what's the best way to wire two 4ohm subs to a 2 channel amp that is 4 ohm and 2 ohm stable?

THANKS in advance!

When you bridge an amp you go from stereo to mono sound, and you basically combine the output power of both channels into one channel. It's done by taking one pos and one neg of the different channels and hooking them into your sub(s). Wiring in series will double the ohm load and wiring in parallel will half it.

Yes you can.

And what's the best way to wire two 4ohm subs to a 2 channel amp that is 4 ohm and 2 ohm stable?
Well since it is 2 ohm stable I would wire those subs in parallel to bring it down to a 2 ohm load. To do that wire sub 1 pos to sub 2 pos to amp pos and sub 1 neg to sub 2 neg to amp neg.

But before you do that make sure it is 2 ohm MONO stable or 2 ohm stereo stable. If it isn't 2 ohm mono stable then that's a different story altogether.

To do that wire sub 1 pos to sub 2 pos to amp pos and sub 1 neg to sub 2 neg to amp neg.

ok. So I will only have one + wire and one - wire going from box to amp ? When you say "wire sub 1 pos to sub 2 pos" are you talking about inside the spkr box directly from sub to sub, or outside the box from left box terminal to right box terminal ?

Also, what's the best way to power the 2 subs w/ the class D mono amp ?

Thanks.

^^^ What I mean is wire your two subs positives together then wire to the amp and do the same with the negatives. So yes wire the subs directly to each other then wire them to the amp.

Didn't I answer that already? Or do you mean something else?

go here and look at wiring option #1 to get a visual of what you should do.

ok sorry, I guess i should wire them parallel to either amp.

Thanks.

Going with the lowest ohm load that your amp will allow will give you the most power.
