Component Crossover or Amp Crossover?

Well I solved my car noise problem by simply lowering the amp level a little. Now I have another problem. I have a 6 1/2 Autotek component set in my front doors being powered by my two channel MTX amp. I have noticed that despite adding the amp I have only noticed a big difference in the highs and not the mids coming out of the component set. I am thinking that maybe the crossover setting on the mid woofer is set too high, but the only adjustment that can be made on the crossover is -3, -6, -12db settings. I can not change the frequency adjustments. I currently have it set on the -3db setting with my amplifier crossover turned off. I am wondering if I run the woofer and driver of each component set directly off the amp, if maybe it will bring out the mids a little more while possibly lowering the highs just a bit. If I were to run the sets directly off of the amp I will use the amps crossover (which has a high pass filter set at 85hz.) and wire the tweeter and woofer in parallel. Will this do what I am hoping it will do or will I be wasting my time? I do not have and I am unable to get the frequency setting of the component set crossover. So I am unable to answer any questions about the Autotek Crossover frequency settings. All advice is gladly appreciated.

Do NOT have the tweeter going straight to the amp if the amp is sending mid frequencies to it. Your tweeters will not last very long. The settings on your crossover that you are refering to are not to adjust the crossover point, they are to set the attenuation of the tweeters. If your tweeters are overpower the mids when the crossovers are set at -3db, try -6db. If that sounds better, try -12. If that sounds bad again leave it at -6.

Since you're running subs, turn the high pass filter on the amplifier on and set it to the frequency that the subs cut out at. You don't want them playing down into the range of the subs or you'll get intermodulation between them which will probably cause a loss of sound in the midrange.

unless you have a very variable crossover system on your amp (u dont) then leave the componet set off of the componet set crossover. they designed the crossover to play the speakers to their maximimum.

what dramatic diffrence are you talking about here, do they sound bad? are their frequencies missing? low midbass? poor vocals? it could be a number of things. one thing to try is reversing the speaker wire to the mid and see if that helps any. try reversing the passenger side first and take a listen, if it doesnt get better switch it back then try the drivers side.

First, the idea about fliping the wires around will only work if I installed the speakers out of phase. I am positive that my wires are correct. Second, the sound I am refering to is mostly the vocals. The midrange woofer on my component set is playing the vocals very low. No matter how high I crank the volume the vocals sound like they are way back in the distance and at a very low volume compared to the rest of the sound being produced through the component set. I will try adjusting the crossover that came with the component set like BESSE suggested. I hope it will work. Any more suggestions will still help in the mean time.

actually flipping the wires around can change the effect no matter wich way u have them wired, just because you wire the speakers "in phase" with each other, doesnt nessicarily mean the sound is getting to your ears in phase. depending on the distance from your ears to the speaker the soundwave could reach you in phase or out of phase. though from your responce it sounds like your having worse issues then phase.

i'd pull the crossover out of the mix and just hook the midrange straight to the amp and see how it sounds that way. do that and let us know how it sounds.
