Everytime you double your subs or speakers provided the same amount of power to each, your dB goes up by 3 each time? That tough part is gettin the amps to do it etc. I learned that in a science class years ago, and have always thought of building a wall with 8s

But consider your referance point with a single 8. It is probably going to be somewhere around 115 db.

Add 1: 118db
Add 2: 119.5
Add 3: 121

Here is where it gets tricky you have to go from having 4 8s to having 8 8s to get the extra 3db, Then you have to go from 8 8s to 16 8s to get another 3db. So after a certain point you will run out of space without getting any significant increase in SPL.

True, but if the box was done well enough you could find the frequency they were best at and tune it.

Either way the same thing applys for any other size.

Do it with 12s, those running 2 12" XXX, For those who are hardcore about sound, it was just a suggestion, I can see running 4 12s easy enough, its just the cost involved. just thought that was neat how you double the speakers and get 3db each time.

I understand exponential growth and all

I find that sticking with selfpowered subs seems the easy way to go.

slitting your wrists would be the easy road in life, but it of course is the absolute worse way.

once you get higher in the spl range that theory wont hold true though. once u start getting so high you may only see a 2 db gain or 1 db gain. another example of the rule of diminishing returns. same goes for powering, doulble your power and theoretically gain 3db.
