"on" switch (no key) - URGENT
Thursday, July 07, 2005 8:04 PM
I am going to be having my dash apart tomorrow... So if you all could comment soon hopefully I can do this tomorrow as well.

I am looking to put a toggle switch on my dash so I can turn my car "on" (not running) without the key. Mainly so I can operate radio, windsheild wipers, lights, etc.

What wires do I need and where are they?

Also, If my car is running, can I flip my 'on switch', the be able to take the key out and the car will still be running?

Thanks.

^^ And also, how much current goes through there? So I get a good switch.

i dunno about winsheild wipers and such, but if it was just for radio, you could run a (fused)wire direct to the battery apart from the swtiched on wire to the head unit with a switch so that when you take the key out and still want to keep listening to music then you flip it on. when your done, flip it off and then turn your car on. kind of like a 2 in one out switch so it either takes from the pink harness wire or the battery. i dunno, just an idea

I was thinking something more along the lines of tapping into the ignition, usign the wires that are the "ON" position for the key.

You would need to get into the Acc and Ignition 2 wires under the steering wheel. I believe the wires are orange and brown.

So the circuit would need to be closed between these 2 wires to make the car be "on"?

You would need to put power into both of the circuits from the battery to trick it into thinking the key was in the on posistion

I added a PS2 to my car. Had to add an invertor. I tapped into the brown wire at the ignition switch and the PS2 comes on when the key is in the "ON" posistion and also the position one click backwards (I beleive it is the "ACC"). My wipers also work in those positions along with the blower motor so you can move the air around.

But the Brown wire at the ignition switch is the 12v source you are looking for. Now just find a good groud.

So I would put a switch to ground the brown wire? Or a switch to send 12v TO the brown wire?

to power up the brown wire properly, you would need to use a relay that is controlled by a switch. The brown acc. wire will draw up to 30 amps if the blower motor is running..
wire up a relay as follows

87 and 85 to 12volts constant (battery) **FUSE IT!!!**
30 to the brown acc. wire in the steering column
86 to your "switch" that you install
then from the other side of your "switch" to ground

when you flip the switch on, it will ground trigger the relay to close the cicuit to power up the acc. wire.

if you want ot keep your car running, get a second relay and wire it up exactly as the first but power up the PINK ignition wire. ( both the brown and pink are needed to keep the car running)

GOOD LUCK!!

I am following what your saying... but... a simple schematic would be extremely handy... please? thank you

look at the first relay diagram....
86 to switch
other side of switch to ground
85 and 30 to 12 volt battery (constant power and FUSE it)
87 to brown acc. wire

for ignition hook up a second relay the same as the first but
wire pin 87 of the second relay to the Pink ign wire
