alt wire replacement
Wednesday, July 06, 2005 3:17 PM
Ok i figured i would replace the main wire on my alt. with 4 gua. Thinking it would be an easy thing to do till I looked under the hood and kinda lost the wire in the engine somewheer never really seeing if it went straight to the batt or what... Can anyone that has done this before with no problems tell me how its done. Can I just bypass the old wire and run the 4 guage straight to the battery?

Oh almost forgot I have a sunfire 2002 no/ecotec

run the new wire straight from the alt to the battery. that'll be fine

I upgraded my ALT/BATT wire and jsut left the stock one there. No need to remove it.

Electricity will take the path of least resistance, so it will go through your new wire anyways.

I ran mine across the frame bar above the radiator.

Make sure you put in a 125-150A fuse inline.

there is no need for a fuse. there isn't one from the factory..so you don't NEED one.

so not to be a newb or anything, but I'd rather be safe than sorry... where on the alt is the poitive connection to the battery located? and I am guessing you can ground the alt from almost anywhere on the alt?

It can never be too fast nor hit too hard!!!!

The positive wire on the alternator is clearly marked with a red sleeve. It's the only wire coming off the thing, and the bolt "points" to the battery pretty much.

There is no "ground" wire on the alternator, it jsut grounds through the engine block, but should you choose to upgrade it aslo (which some ppl, myself included, have done) I recommend the mounting bolt that is pretty much on the opposite side of the positive terminal of the ALT. It "points" at the passenger fender. It is just above the belt.

You can run this ground wire to the frame, or to the battery. I ran mine straight to the battery.

^^ If you do upgrade ythe ground wire, make sure you use a file or sandpaper to get any rust or dirt off so you get a good clean conection.

Also, the ground wire is NOT required. If you interested in improved battery charging (which is why you would upgrade your ALT/BATT wire) the positive is the only thing that NEEDed. The ground is nice to add, and simple, easy, and cheap enough, that you might-as-well.

it's probably easier to attack it from underneath the car...

well i used 1/0awg on mine....and i could NOT bolt it on from up above, i had to manuever it from underneath, it was quite the pain.

keysurfer-there is only one power wire on the alt...so there isn't much you could do wrong, lol.

You should have a plug going to your alt w/ wires coming out of it,... Ignore it. The battery terminal it just a post with a nut on it, there is a wire with a ring-connector bolted to it. It should say BATT somewhere near it, you can't miss it. Just hook up your new wire with the one thats there. Make sure to disconnect your battery before you start messing with your alternator though, I've forgotten before and sent sparks flying everywhere.

As for the fuse....it's a good idea, electrical fires suck. As for stock, everything is fused in one way or another, even if it's through a fusible link. Your better of to be safe at the cost of a few bucks than to even have the slightest chance of burning a wire. It's highly unlikely, but with the correct fuse it can't happen.

I might have to to that too, my bat can't keep up w/ my amp
