what is the benefit to down firing subs? are certain subs meant for doing that or can you down fire any subs and how?? ive heard about doing that here and there but ive only seen it once in 97 sunfire
bass is omnidirectional. if i'm not mistaken its for looks only. i may be wrong though.
Someguy io think you are right it is just for show
Fast isn't always good, looks and sound is sometimes better
Imamarine
Yeah its just for show. Alotta subs have chrome baskets so some people like to show that off.
Thx,
Michael

it doesnt matter what way there facing. like
SomeGuy said, subs are omnidirectional. although i remember reading somewhere that if you have them reversed you need to reverse the wiring or something like that. not 100% on that though. i know my pioneer headunit has an option if you have your subs reversed...

Ok I think I can Get This.... The sound the Same Either way? I was Told you get a 0.5 db lost to inverted subs. ( Maybe I am wrong) I Had my Inverted or down-firing and It sounded the same as it does now with it Installed the right way. If your box is not big enough you could invert your subs and get more air space. The only bad part I have heard about it is that it takes up more room with the mags pointing out. And you also have to switch wires ..
hook + amp to - sub and - amp to + sub
This makes the sub fire outward
downfiring..
inverted...
two totally different things!!!

I know they are different but one guy made it sound like he meant inverted
there shouldnt be any diff in which way they are facing, but the wiring does have to be reversed if pointed reverse... a sub is designed to displace air in a certain direction...°
Now there are subs which really shouldnt be reversed, but then then again.. they are crap from the begining newayz

as long as both subs are inverted (if there are two) then you really don't have to change the phase, as long as they are the same.
if your system is set up and tuned properly then you won't hear any difference except at very low volumes.

not necesearilyu you have to have both subs in same direction....
one can be facing the other way.... phase should be set to normal.. or 0 ...
the diffrence would be that you have to wire the sub thats inverted to opposite poles...
like negative to pos.. and pos to neg... at the amp like i said... when ther aamp is pushing that certain sound from the music... its suposed to push the air a certain direction, and just as long as both are pushing in that same direction and not canceling each other out, you are set.....

dude...that's what i said!!!!
as long as boths subs are inverted...then you don't have to worry about changing the wiring.

that phase thing would only work on seperate amps too. their is no phase being changed if they arent wired differently all youd be doing is making them pull in and not push out. phase only comes on mono amps i believe so you wouldnt be able to switch it on one channel.

you change the phase of the speaker by simply changing the positive and negative wires.
if you had two subs...one inverted, and one regularly mounted. you WOULD need to change the wiring on one of them.

if you make risers for your box around the speaker, then turn it over so the speaker is playing into the floor (make sure not touching the floor) you will usually see a small increase in volume. this is downfiring.

it'd certainly make it harder for someone to steal them though. after looking at both the beck front and top of the box, the theif would put on a puzzled look and say "where the **** is it?"
in my experience the quality of the bass is always better when downfiring. but ive only tested this in extended cab trucks
