Windshield wiper motor?

Gotta problem. I have a 04 Sunfire, and seem to be having problems with my windshield wiper motor. The high setting seems to be the same speed as the setting below it. However if I manually push the lever and hold it tight up, than the wipers go faster at a speed that I believe should be the highest setting. Anybody else have this problem? Does it actually sound like the wiper motor, or is the high setting not supposed to be very fast?

Well, after further investigation, I'm guessing this is normal. It just doesnt seem very fast. I compared the speeds to my sister's 01 sunfire, and it is about the same. For the Delay,1,2 settings I'm getting about 9,35,50 strokes per minute. It sounds fast, but nothing compared to every other car I've seen. Any way I can put a faster motor in?

It's the switch, not the motor, that controls the speeds.

I don't know of a way to upgrade it... but I must say the highest setting on my car is pretty darn swift!! Maybe if you upgrade to the variable delay wiper arm? It's just plug and play. $25 new at the dealer... probably $5 at a wrecker.

Thanks, they hard to replace? I've done it on a previous car, but it involved takin apart the whole steering wheel assembly, wasn't hard, but that one didn't have a airbag, didn't know how that would affect replacing it.

Nah, it's easy as pie. Shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes if you have the right tools. You'll need a 7mm socket and a 7mm box wrench to get it without taking the wheel off... but if you're up for taking the wheel off, by all means do so

The top plastic piece of the steering column cover pulls straight up and off.. (two plastic clips). The bottom has three 7mm bolts underneath it.

If I recall correctly, the turn signal arm is overtop of the wiper arm at the top of the column. Take out both 7mm bolts. Then use the 7mm box wrench to remove the bolts on either side, just behind the edge of the lower plastic surround... but without removing the airbag or steering wheel.

Called a couple of different Pontiac houses today to inquire about a switch with a variable delay, and they both said all they could get was the stock one that comes on the sunfire. That sucks.
