my buddy's neighbor has a spl reader that the city of chicago reads but it only goes up to 120 db. all of us got our systems together and couldnt hit above 105 on the meter does this mean all of our systems arent that loud? I mean cuz if u get in the car and listen to the bass it is so loud and hits so hard but it only read 105.
so we all were wondering if it isnt meant for reading car audio or are our systems just not that loud?
my system is
alpine 9831 hu
rockford p3001 300 watt rms and 900 watt amp
12" type R sealed box 13x13 (alpine recommended box) 2 ohm subwoofer
1 farad rockford digital cap.
now also my amp is only set at half so could that also matter?
you should be at least in the 120's. I have a pioneer sub, and a 300rms amp and im at 132. where in the car are you taking the readings from?

i think it isnt meant for car audio he said he uses it for machinery so i think it isnt meant to read car audio.
and we tried everywhere because what is weird is the lower bass hitting is lower on the meter than higher bass.
Most of those types of SPL meters aren't very sensitive to lower frequencies. I would think it should still be showing higher than that though. As said above, where are you putting the meter?

I'd be happy if that was the case. Just means you can have it up that much louder before they can give you a ticket.

Are DB readers expensive and where would you go about buying one?
you could get a cheap one at radioshack for like 40 bucks

^^^exact;ly what i did.....only reads up to 126 but it has an atmosphere db mode and a sound/audio mode. the sound comp mode reads different freqs than the other. i highly suggest it.

yeah i think that the db meter isnt meant for car audio it was from the city of chicago that is used to measure for machinery so i dont think it was meant for that bass and i am hitting at least 120 db
