Ok,
So I went and got the harness for the 03 cavalier. I plugged it up and connected all the wires including the ground. I turned on the car, and the damn thing wont power up. I don't know what caused this to happen? It is a Pioneer DEH-1000 and has been sitting for the past about 2 years, maybe not that long. It also was kinda hot, could it be over heated? It was sitting in my car for a couple hours... Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
Thanks,
Chris
read the sticky, there's an accessory wire you have to run to the radio harness.
-Chris
I know, all that is hooked up. T he battery, accessory and the ground. I have no idea why its not working.
Chris
I hooked up the RED wire coming out of the deck to the red wire coming out of the harness(ACC wire). But... there was an extra wire that came with the harness, it was red. Where does that go?
Chris
So there were two Red wires that came with the harness? I just installed my cd player yesterday and I had some touble with it not powering up. I ended up blowing my fuse, so you could check that.

Yea man... I took the harness out of the packaging and there was one red wire connected to the harness and there was one loose that says "+12 Volt Power" on it. It is bare wire on one side with a clip on the other side that looks like it is supposed to be plugged into something. It seems to me like I am missing something... The fuse WAS blown but I replaced it.
Thanks,
Chris
Listen man....
For that radio to power up, there only has to be 3 wires connected... Forget about the harness you bought, just concentrate on the wires coming out of the back of the radio.
The black wire goes to ground, the yellow wire goes to constant and the red wire goes to an accessory source..
If the red wire is not seeing voltage, the cd player will not turn on because it will think the vehicle is off... Can't you go buy a $2 test light and stop guessing if its right?
You can temporarily test the unit by connecting the red wire to the yellow wire. Make sure you press the "ON" button as well...

Ok... All those wires are connected coorectly... If it does not power up, waht does this mean?
Chris
It doesnt matter if they are connected, it only matters if they are actually seeing voltage...
Go out and buy a test light- if the red wire & the yellow wire both show volts, and you're properly grounded, then that means the radio is beat.
Here do this- connect the red & the yellow wire together... Take the radio to your engine bay, and touch those 2 to the positive terminal... Touch the black wire from the radio to the negative terminal-- Make sure you press the "source" or "on" button... If nothing happens, the radio is kicked... If there is any fuses on the back of the radio, make sure they aren't blown either.

Ok man,
So i tested it at the battery, and it powers up fine. I hook it back up to the harness, and it dont wanna power up! I am really not THAT dumb... the wires are hooked up correctly.
Chris
I had the same problem. If I remember correctly, you have to hook up both red wires to the one wire on the harness. Do this and Im 99% sure it will work.
Both red wires? There is only one RED wire coming out of the back of the deck.
so you have your new radio connected to the new harness...right?
the only wire that shouldn't be connected to the harness is the acc one.
most people just tap that wire to a different acc wire or straight to the wiper one. on my wife's 02 it was just a simple fuse tap that took care of the problem w/ a 5amp fuse.
Gotcha... I got it workin now... I just ran it to the CIG lighter power wire... would that be ok?
Chris
you HAVE to run the red ACC wire from the deck..to a switched source in the fuse block. just go with the wiper fuse.

How? So I find which fuse s the wiper fuse and then what?
C.
your harness comes with a fuse tap....
all you do is tap into your wiper fuse (it's marked accordingly in your fuse box) and use the fuse tap like shown in this pic

you also need to fuse your ACC wire seperately from the wiper fuse. just go buy a small fuseholder with like a 5 amp fuse and wire it inline with your accesory wire (the red one!!)

Ok, so I have the tap, now what is the silver lookin thing that is there?
C.
the reason behind the wiper or another acc wire is because these items have power sent to them when you turn your car on or put it in battery only.
Right... So why is it NOT a good idea to splice it into the CIG lighter power wire?
C.
because that is a constant 12v...you only want your radio turned on and working when you want to use it...right?
hence...the when put in battery on only or car turned on.
Gotcha man, thanks. Can you shed light on this dimming issue?
