Question about leads and rattling noise (sub)
Monday, June 27, 2005 6:18 PM
Okay heres the deal, I'm selling my Infinity Reference 1030w (10" SVC) sub, as I upgraded to the Kappa Perfect, but one thing that pissed me off with the sub while I had it was that when it hit hard, it sounded like the sub was rattling inside - so I'd like to fix it for whoever buys it from me. Now, its extremely hard to describe the sound, but imagine a jackhammer hitting really fast and kinda high pitched - I guess you could also imagine it sounding like an air compressor, that probably would be easier to understand.

Now, I assumed it was something inside the sub wacking something else, and I asked on the Sounddomain forums a long time ago what was happening and what I could do about it. The one good reply I got from the post was someone saying it was the leads were probably smacking against the cone, and that if I glued a piece of felt to the back of the cone that it wouldn't hit so hard and cause the noise.

Now, what I'm wondering is if that's true, or could it be something else? Maybe it has something to do with the box? Would wrapping felt AROUND the leads (as opposed to gluing it on the cone) take away from the power given to the sub (ie. would it insulate the connection at all?)

Thanks,
Dave

might be the sub bottoming out....

if you think it's the leads..take it out of the box, and play it free-air while you watch the tinsel leads. you can see if they slap the cone or not.

I doubt the sub is bottoming out (if what I think that means is right), because I REALLY dont listen to my music that loud.

Good idea with the free air though, I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

just because your volumes not at max doesn't mean your aren't clipping the crap out of your amp

Well heres the deal, I hooked the sub up in free air and the leads arent hitting the cone, so I guess thats not the problem.

I don't think the amp is clipping because it has a little power meter on the side (its a RF Punch series) and that never makes it past half way. I'm assuming when it goes the whole way around that's the max the amp will put out.

Anyways, aside from clipping, what do other people think could be happening? When I had it free air it still did it a little, but not the extent when it was in the box, sounded like it was coming from the spider, but it was hard to tell.

describe your sound better, is the bass coming out clear along with a seperate banging sound. or is the bass coming out badly. could it be a poor sub box?

sounds like the coil is either bottoming out...or it's damaged.

The bass sounds perfectly fine, and the noise is only audible when you get basically 2-3 ft away from the sub or so. Its a relatively high pitched noise (its so hard to explain, aside from the other two attempts of describing it, you could think of a machine gun sound playing in the background of a movie or something, you know you hear that faint ta-ta-ta-ta sound) that you can CLEARLY hear when the sub starts to hit medium/hard (increasing in loudness as the volume/bass increases). I was thinking it might be the box, but now that I took it out and noticed that even in free air it seemed to be doing it a little (maybe it was something else vibrating when I had it free air as I had to turn the volume up quite a bit before it started again - and even then it was quiet, so like i said maybe not the same thing).

The box was fairly cheap, and I got it used - whoever had it before me put the screws right through the wood on the other end, and it seems like the infinity is a tad small for the opening even though it is a 10" box. I'm making a new box for my Perfect, so I'll put the old on in that when its done and check to see if it makes the same noise.
Probably not related, but the box I have is a little bit bigger volume than reccommended for the sub, I dont think that would have any relation to the problem though would it?

wysiwyg: It's been doing this for the whole time I've had the sub, if it were damaged wouldnt it have blown (or at least gotten worse) by now? And what about the power meter I was talking about, dont you think it would have to be passed the maximum output to be clipping? Maybe not, but that's how I see it. I sure don't wanna damage my new sub though, so let me know what you think. Just as an aside, the gain is set to about 3/8, volume on the headunit is about 1/3 usually, bass boost is at 6db on the RF knob thing (goes to 18).

Does it sound like very quick paper flapping? And is your box a sealed box? And als, try turning down your gain on your amp.

that little flashy meter on your amp has nothing to do with your gain being set properly. pay no attention to it at all.

it's obviously a problem with the sub. if it's mechanicly making noise at low-medium volumes.

I'd like to know an answer to this too as i have 2 Infinity Reference subs ( a 10 and a 12, one sealed and one ported) and they both do this....
