Replace Speaker Wires?
Monday, June 27, 2005 11:57 AM
i plan on getting a whole new audio system (speakers, amp, sub). my question is, should i replace the speaker wires to the 6x9s in the back and the door speakers or use the existing ones already wired. i realize it would be a p.i.t.a. to rewire everything but would it be a significant difference or would useing the old wires be just as good? im not going for competition qualtiy, but i dont want crap either.

Are you going to run an outboard amp? If no, then OEM is okay.

even the stock 18 gauge can handle a outboard amp, Although I would push for 12 guage or 10 guage for re-wiring. (the stuff that comes with most speakers = garbage.)

10 awg?? really not needed. if you re-wire it you only need to use 14-16awg.

i wouldn't bother with it if your running the speakers off the deck...

if you have an amp on the speakers you have to run new speakers wires anyway (from the amp to the speaker)

I wouldn't go bigger than 16 unless I was supplying more than 150w to the driver in question, regardless of frequencies reproduced.

I'm assuming Steve is just doing a "deck and fours". In which case, OEM is okay.

find me a speaker wire that is 10 gauge. i suggest running 16-18 guage, and 12 guage for big subs.

well i was told that i could still get some good performance running the 4 speakers from the deck, and an amp for the sub, so i was thinking of doing that.

You'll get "okay" performance with deck powering speakers and an amped sub. The speakers will be making sound at the very least, which is better than the speakers not making sound.

If it were my car, I would forget rear speakers and spend that money on an amp for my fronts. But it's not my car, you do what you want.

it depends on your deck, the RMS of the deck outs are often rated way higher than what they actualy are. the stock wiring is fine for deck power, and even up to 75watts per channel... higher than that you will need to replace the wires with 16-gauge
