my power wire and ground - Audio & Electronics Forum

Today I ran all the wires for my amp MTX RT251D (just something to power a sub), I ran the Red Power Wire and the Amp remote wire (turn on signal) along the drivers side of the car, and I ran the RCA cable on the passengers side.
I ran my red power wire into the engine bay using the large white rubber grommet, now I want to make this clear, I DO NOT want to CUT or DAMAGE this grommet or the firewall! So I pulled the wire through like this:
I'm thinking this might leak but i put some silicon or tape, I think it'll be alright, what do you think guys?
Also I need to ask about my ground wire (short, almost a foot), I was looking for a place to use as a ground. I'm thinking of either using the seatbelt, antenna bracket, but yet again I do not want to scrape any paint or drill holes into the body. Whats the best ground location for me?
the way you have it ran should be fine...
and for the best ground, get a 3/8" bolt. drill a hole, and bolt that puppy down.
even if you use a factory bolt...you STILL have to have a bare metal surface to attach it to (NO PAINT)

I would poke a hole in that grommet instead of fishing the wire around it- that kinda defeats the purpose of the grommet...
Your power wire can very easily chaff against the metal and short out your power wire. I don't know what the big deal is with putting a hole in the grommet- unless you make it some huge hole, its pretty much guaranteed not to leak. Just poke it with a phillips screw driver and slip it through... not a big deal at all... I'd rather have a hole in the grommet than a small fire under your carpet--
Also, unless you can find a good solid existing bolt near your amps in the back of your car- it also has to be bare metal (highly unlikely) then you will have to either drill a hole, or scrape some paint- one or the other... Again, not a big deal.
Use the bolts on the strut tower, or possibly the bolts holding the seatbelts down under the backseat-- If you are hung up on the bare metal part, spray it with some primer after you get the ground secured. The ground connection is probably the most important thing when installing a system- If you ground is not clean, then your @!#$ won't work right...
My 2 cents.

I'm one those people that don't like changes so thats why i'm making a big deal about this.
Thanks for the opinion about the wire getting cut on the metal, I was thinking about that, forgot to mention it. I'm gonna deal with it by using some tape.
I have noticed that the antenna bracket is bare metal so i might end up using that, or i might try the spare tire thread at the bottom.

That doesn't make any sense to me... I don't see how poking a tiny hole in the grommet is changing anything... Are you also one of those people who don't like to do things right? It seems like you are going out of your way to do it wrong. The right way to do it is to insulate the wire from touching the metal- wrapping tape around it is the ghetto way to do it.
Just poke a hole- If there wasn't a wire in it, you wouldn't even be able to tell there was a hole.

I put a slit in my grommet... then when and if the wire gets pulled out it just flaps back over and looks good as new.
I've got so many wires going thru the hole now though that it sticks open a bit, but I have never had a problem with water leaking in... or out for that matter.
And if you dont like change... I question why you put in subs...
As for grounding... If you pull back the trunk liner on the drivers side you will see a random support-ish type rail with a random hole in it. A lot of people, including myself, just file off the paint and use that hole.

You have to it's the most important like Red Devil said
What are you worried about, resell, lease? Trust me nobody will know about a little cut in the grommet or paint scrapped off in the truck under carpet.
And no do not use your antenna, do it right or don't do it at all!

holy hell do you know how many times Ive changed my ground. lol. and how many grounds I have currenty. lets see alarm relay head unit, distro blocks x2 second batt. thats 6 and not counting moving them either.
ok guys thanks, i think i may have a problem... lol
For the postivie Ive got some wire loom going in there, so that'll be good!
For the ground right now, I have it rigged up to the spare tire screw, if that doesn't work, i'm gonna use the seatbelt bolt inside, those are the only spots i can use besides drilling holes, because my gorund wire is less than a foot.
what about the strut tower nut/bolt?
i tried that my ground cable isn't long enough ^^thanks
buy new cable?? lol
Not that it really matters that much, but why is it you don't want to cut a hole in the grommet or sand paint down?

call me when your power wire melts.
not using a gromment and having your wire on bare metal is the biggest saftey no no in the audio business. even if u wrap tape around it, over time its going to cut thru it and ground out your power wire
as far as a ground, if you dont sand down to bare metal your going to have a poor ground no matter where it is.
run it through the gromment, or drill a new hole and put a gromment thru it, if you do a good job 95% of the people wouldnt even know it wasnt a factory hole.

poke a hole man. i set a fire off in my trunk for doing stupid @!#$ like that and luckly i smelled the smoke and put it out before anything other than the wire was damaged. if you dont poke the hole, i'm going to find out where you live and poke the hole for you. think of it like its a girl, poke the hole!
ok you guys have me convinced, I will slit a hole in the gromet because the way I have it just doesn't look right and eventually overtime the gromet will get deformed and it won't look the same. I'm not so worried about the metal chaffing the wire because the metal by the gromett is shaped and bent smoothly so the grommet can fit around it.
As for the ground right now I rigged up a system at the spare tire screw, it'll be like that for now it was too hot outside to do any other things.
I'm not too convinced the spare tire screw is the greatest ground you could find...
Any audio/auto place will have wire for 50 cents to a dollar a foot (depending on gauge) so It wouldn't be hell to get a logner wire for your ground.
