New amp = new questions
Wednesday, June 15, 2005 12:13 PM
Well my previous amp (JBL BP600.1) was stolen out of my car recently, so that meant it was time to upgrade! I've got two RE HC12's, and i ordered an orion 1200d (one to begin with, i'll be ordering another one in a few months). Now that i have it, i've got a few questions though...

Right now i've got 12GA speaker wire inside the box, i'm wondering if i need to upgrade that? I would assume so, but i'm not sure. I'd like to put wire in the box that will handle 1200+ watts so i don't have to upgrade in a few months.

I'm thinking of running 1/0GA power wire (again, so i don't have to upgrade in a few months). Also, since i don't have the amp yet (it's getting here friday, and i also hope to install it friday, as i'm going on a road trip saturday and i need some bass for the trip!), i was wondering if anyone knows what size power and ground wires the terminals on the amp accept. I haven't been able to find any info about it online and i thought it'd be nice to have all the wires ready when the amp gets here.

Last thing, i've heard people say that the orion amps can be 1/2Ohm stable for daily driving. Any truth to it? I have my choice of 2Ohm or 1/2Ohm until i get the second amp (when i'll run 1 ohm on each amp), and i'd rather run 1/2 Ohm if i can.

Thanks in advance for any info.

your going to need 4 gauge power and ground, i have read that orions or stable down to .5 but im not sure if it needs to be modded to do it try search www.termpro.com.

wiring it to 1/2 ohm will void your warranty IF you have one.

Nope, i don't have a warranty, i'll probably just leave it at 2 ohms until i get a second amp. Which leads me to a second question. The speakers are dual 2 ohm, so can i strap the amps and just run one amp to each speaker, so each amp will see 1 ohm, but have them strapped because they are in the same (ported) enclosure.

Also, is 12GA large enough for 1200 watts?

strapping the amps makes them act as one amp. why would you need to strap them, then run one on each sub? kinda defeats the purpose.

but yes, the orion 1200's are strappable

From what i've read here and on other forums if the speakers are in the same enclosure they have to be strapped. From what i understand it's just to make sure the signal that each speaker gets is exactly the same. Someone (i think it was on here) said that one of the settings on one of the amps they were using was different than the other, and it ended up with one of their speakers being blown. Maybe they were wrong?

no chris you have it right, if both are in the same airspace its better to feed them one signal versus 2 signals. but it would be probalby a bit easier just to throw a divider in the box when u build it. that will save you having to strap it, plus the divider will add some strength to the box. and generally make it easier if you have any issues with either amp.

The box is ported though.
