Double gauge wiring?
Tuesday, June 14, 2005 7:38 PM
Ok so i have my gauges set up in 2 different places, or actually will be soon as i finish the Diagnostic plate. Dont ask, your see it when im done.

Well im using Electric gauges, And my question refers to the sending units.

I wish to use 1 sending unit, to 2 identical gauges, one being in the dash, and the other being in the engine compartment.

I have sending units for both but would rather keep it simple, and not have to tap a second hole for the other sender.

So can i use 1 sending unit, and connect wires to both gauges, and it still be accurate? Or will i get an odd 6v-6v split?

theoreticlaly it shoudl vork cause they arent based on voltage, unless they arent digital, are they??? im not a gauge expert sorry

You can't "split" voltage like that, but it could matter depending of what type of signal the sending unit is actually sending. If its sending just a variable voltage then it should be okay, but if its pulses or something weird like that then there might be a problem.

why dont you turn your car on...watch one guage...then hook the other one up without doint ANYTHING else. if the first one changes then your out of luck. it nothing happens and the second guage just goes to where the first one is...the nyour good to go.

just a thaught

I don't have much experience with automotive gages, but I do have lots of experience with industrial type instrumentation.

If it's a current type signal you should be fine if you run the 2 gages in series. The sending unit would adjust the output to send the proper current. Usually these units require a minimum of 250 ohms of load. I've ran as many as 4 instruments off of a single output with no problems (probably could have added a few more).

If it's a voltage type unit you would have to run the gages in parallel and hope that the sending unit is capable of the additional load. To accurately predict this you would have to know the current draw of each gage and compare that to the max output of the sending unit.

What type of gages are you using (what do they measure)?

They are either gonna be Dakota Digital or autometer C2 series alalog, Oil pressure, oil temp, trans temp, coolant temp, Volt, And A/f.

Not sure which im going with persay, but the oil pressure, Trans temp, and Volt will be in the dash.
