Ground loop won't go away...
Monday, June 06, 2005 6:18 PM
Ok I am confused and want to know if anyone would know what's going on...

Had the stereo set up... worked GREAT for weeks... I go up to my friends house... (got new 6x9's) to have him put them in... then a ground loop mysteriously appeared... MIGHT have done it right before the install but not sure...

So anyways... after fiddling with it for a while... we couldn't figure out what was wrong... a guy in our club had an RCA filter, we hooked that up... no ground loop. We also thought that MAYBE it was the remote wire being run next to the RCA's... so we relocated it... still had a ground loop... it was really annoying, so I had my friend turn the sub down the whole way/off in the meantime.

So I went out today and bought an RCA filter... hooked it up... turned the bass back up... nothing. Tried switching the connections... nothing. Unplugged the filter and hooked the RCA's back up to the amp... and for 10 seconds or so in between a song had no ground loop... bass was there...then the ground loop came back. Hooked back up the filter... no bass. I am confused...

My friend is going to look at it sometime this weekend... but I was wondering if anyone might have an idea that maybe we hadn't thought of. Thanks!

Ground loop....

Ive heard of the term, but never really understood it- you mean, like an engine whine in your speakers?

so the noise is only an issue on your amps sub, it doesnt come thru the rest of your speakers? when u say ground loop. is it a whine that gets louder with the engines rpm's ?

It's not an alternator whine... the sub goes "boom boom boom boom boom boom boom" when there's no music playing, it's continuous, and really annoying. It continues the same "boom boom boom boom boom boom" during the songs too, along with the bass from the song. From reading on this forum, the only things I can think of would be my RCAs just went bad in that day (Saturday), or the ground maybe? Any ideas?

Make sure the RCA filters you installed weren't high pass filters. This would filter out the low frequency signals from you deck and your crossover (I'm assuming you have one) would filter out the high frequencies, meaning you wouldn't get any signal to your subs.

Don't think they were high pass filters? THe packaging said "Ground Loop Isolator"??

if you unplug the rca's but the system is on, do you hear it? if not it has to be coming in thru the headunit or rca's. i'd just go buy a cheap set of rcas and switch them out. if that doesnt work, i'd run a set of rca's from a friends headunit to your amp. turn both on. if your subs play fine, u know the issue is with the headunit. if thats the case i'd try to redo the ground on it and if that doesnt work maybe try another rca output (if it has one) if it doesnt i'd look at sending the unit in. if u have the ability to try another deck in there, that would help u troubleshoot as well. with this type of problem there usually is no easy answer, u just have to break the system down till u find out where the noise is entering. any problems i encounter i'll usually check the grounds first.

as said above it can be the rca's, headunit or the ground on the amp. try to change the amps ground also that might help

A lot of the ground loop isolators I've seen also filter out lower frequencies, which is why you don't get any bass when the filter is on. As said above, check the RCA cables and the deck outputs. If the subs worked before, I kind of doubt it's the amp ground, but check that too.

I would try the ground. I just had this problem. The sub would just go boom boom boom like you said. I changed the RCAs and that didn't work then i moved the ground to a different spot and it seemed to fix it.

mine used to do that. turned out that the rca inputs on the amp were touching the matal part of the amp and picking up signal. i had to like, bend the input and stick some electrical tape in there so it wouldnt touch anymore. hard to explain really..
