headlight problem
Thursday, June 02, 2005 9:29 AM
Searched and didn't really find what I was looking for.

Just picked up a 2000 Sunfire (2.2L, auto).

DRLs don't work, headlights work fine and only one high beam works (driver's side). I replaced the relay and that didn't help any.

Any help you be great!

Thanks,

Brian

Playing around with it again and the relay clicks about 8 times beofre the CEL comes. I read a thread that said the bulb may be burnt out, not the case this time. I swaped the lights around and the high and low work fine in the driver's side.

So now i'm stumped.

in the drivers side kick panel there is the BCM(big black box) the middle of 3 plugs should have a dark blue wire. make sure that wire is either grounded or connected to the other half of itself. hope that isnt confusing

I know exactly your problem

You ahve a burnt out headlight.

The all the headlight filiments must be in working order for you DRL's to work. Replace your headlights and your problem will be solved.

More likely just replace the passanger side bulb. When that side goes, so does your DRL's. If the driver side goes, it doesnt happen.

Im having that same problem. DRLs dont work, but if i turn the lights on manually both high and low beams work. Hopefully its the bulb, too dark out now to check but i will try again in the morning.

Just checked the bulbs and they are fine. I moved the pass side to the drivers side and it work perfect. BUT still not high beam on the passenger side, no matter what bulb is in there.

I tried to find the blue wire going into the black box, but it looks like there are multiple in the middle connector. Some regualr blue, some light blue, and if IIRC 2 dark blue ones. I am going to check again tho. Wish I had my digi cam so I could get a picture of it.

OK last one, dark blue with white stripe or solid regular shade of blue?

So I've tried everything.
1) changed DRL relay: nothing different happened

2) changed both bulbs: still nothing, lows work bbut only drivers high and no DRLs (bonus: got to upgrade to Silverstars, on sale for 25% off)

3) grounded out the blue wire on the BCM connector: stopped the CEL but DRLs still don't work and only one high beam

This is damn frustrating !!!

Anything else I should check before I drive the car off a cliff?!!

dang, you have tried everything i can suggest. i'm all tapped out. Except for one thing, when you ground that blue wire form the bcm it disbales the drls. its the common mod way to do it. did you tap into the wire or cut it???

I cut it and grounded the rest of the wire that was coming out of the BCM, not the part that continues into the cars wiring harness. That correct right?

yes, ground the BCM side, and tape off the other one. Sounds like it might be time to make friends with a GM tech.
