building first box advice

I'm tired of my crappy sealed box and decided to go ahead and build my own. I have a couple of noob questions. I'm building a ported box for an audiobahn aw1200q sub, I have all the specs to build the box and then got a headache when i read on what to do for the port or ports. It says in the manual the specs are for round ports but then go on and describe a slot port. So does it make a difference slot or round??? And if I do round do I need two ports?Keep in mind I NEVER built a box and would like some of the experts advice. thanks

listening, have always had sealed and liked them, but working on designing a new box with future interior changes. definitely considering ported.

Depends on a couple things...first, if it gives you the specs on the size of the round ports you need, they have a converter on their website ( http://www.audiobahninc.com ) that will give you what the square-ported version would be. Also, make sure you read about the dimensions of the recommended box for that sub. Some of their subs perform much better in a sealed box, others perform best under a ported application.

If you are doing one sub, in a single box, I would say stay with one port, as long as the size allows it (some ports have to be quite long). That particular sub, you could do well with sealed, or ported. The "middle" range of the ported recommendations, is about 2.3 cubic feet, with a 4 inch port, 7 1/4 inches long. For a squared port, you'd have to figure out how long or narrow you want the port to be. You could make it 6 inches long, and 2 1/4 inches wide (inside dimensions, of course). Same depth though, 7 1/4 inches.

Hope it helps any.

in my experience, the round parts make more noise then the slot ports, so i've always been a fan of the slot ports.

Don't bash sealed boxes too much. I'm going to guess that you're using a prefabricated (possibly Q-Logic?) box right now, and that is the problem. Its not that the box is sealed, but that it isn't made for that sub. I used a sealed box for a single 10 that I built for two years, and It sounded awesome, granted, I am getting a $2K audio system from MTX to replace all that, but that's a different thread altogether...

Actually yes it's a pre-fabricated box but , It sounds just ok but sounds 10x better when I pull my back seat down. I was looking to build my first ported box to specs and compare to the sealed one.

A slot port is easier to make, in my opinion. I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I've built several custom sealed boxes, but with my new sub, I want to try a ported. Luckily, the Thunder subs have precise plans for the Sledgehammer enclosures, which are optimized for that particular sub. All I have to do is integrate those dimentions into my amp wall/ sub box front.
