Need ideas for enclosure please
Thursday, June 02, 2005 7:21 PM
I need help from all of you audio gurus. I need some ideas for a sub enclosure. I drive a 2003 Cavalier and want to build a box for 2 Rockford Fosgate HE2 10" subs. I want each sub to have it's own space. Any help would be great. I am new to box building and want to build it myself. I am able to build it, I just don't know what style or design to build. I want high output with sound quality. Also what way should the subs be firing, toward the rear, corners, front, top etc.
Thanks for all your help.

The manual should have recommended volume for the box etc in it. Read up on it, measure it out and get to cutting. I recommend using 3/4 inch MDF (medium density fiberboard). You can get it at just about any lumber yard for about 20 bucks for a 8foot by 4foot sheet. I used about half a sheet to make about a 1.8 cubic ft box so that can get you a rough estimate.

Also you want to use silicone sealer inside all the joints and 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch long wood screws. No nails lol

^^ I've had experience with nails getting 'vibrated' out of place though I bet with how much power your pushing, it's prolly ok if nail gun'ed

nails, screws, neither make a differance. Make sure you use wood glue, or my personal favorite gorilla glue on all joints. Once the glue dries it is stronger then the wood itself, you could even take the screws out and jump on the box and it wont come apart.

2500 rms...in the process of 5kw rms.

a drywall screw is VERY weak. not gonna be much difference between that or a 2" nail.

using screws is mainly just to act as a clamp until the glue dries anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I don't have access to the internet as often as I'd like so sorry for the delay in response. I have built sealed boxes before, however I wanted to know what styles would get me the best sound and spl combo. I was told that a slot ported box would be best. I know that ported boxes are tuned to certain frequencies. How can you tell what frequency the box is at. Is there a formula for this?

Is anybody familiar with the JL Audio slot ported box for the single W7's or W6's? The ones with the sub behind an oval face. I designed a box with in a similar idea. Instead of a oval I would use a Chevy symbol. My question for this style is can I hide the ports behind the solid face of the Chevy symbol or should I expose the ports?

Thanks again and I will check back later today if you guys have any questions for me.

Why? From what I've heard...it barely makes any audible difference.

I think he's asking if anyone glasses it to seal the enclosure....fiberglass bonds to wood real good.
