i got two new pioneer TS-A6980R 6x9's. they obviously wont fit into the old hole and i dont want to cut the metal so i decided to mount them on top of the rear deck. will i need any other support or bracing besides just cutting a hole in the deck and mounting them there? will it flex or move around? if that doesnt work, i thought about just putting some wood b/w the deck and the metal to hold it up better. will this be neccessary so the speakers dont bend the deck? any advice or even pics would be great. thanx in advance.

dont cavs come stock with 6x9's in the rear? why wont it fit?
it doesnt sit all the way down in the hole. the underpart, brace, w/e u call it, is wider than the weak 6x9's that come in it.

oh ya that makes sense.... if you put them on top of the rear deck then set them in there and see how they sit... if they push down on the rear deck then fab something to hold them in place so it doesnt bust the rear deck...the rear deck is a thin thin piece of cardboard material with cloth over it..it isnt incredibly strong

here's mine... and if cardomain craps out...

all I did was cut out the rear deck and bolt the speakers in, but it shakes the entire deck when I have my music up. That may just be the amp, but it doesn't make any noise anyways. If you want to completely eliminate that, put some poly-fill between the deck cover and the deck, on top of the metal part.

just trim the sheetmetal so the basket fits. mounting them on top looks like azz anyway.

You could take out the plastic frame and make a 3/4" MDF version of it. Then if it still doesnt fit trim the metal and enlarge the hole as large as you can without hitting the screw holes but, leave enough that there is still some integrity. If you are really worried about flexing make two flanges and put one on each side of the metal.
i took the plastic frame and modified it to mount from the bottom upsidedown. this way the speaker screws to the frame from the bottom and it doesnt require cutting of the metal.

^^^^ you don't even need the plastic frame. Just hold the speaker from the bottom and center it somewhat around the speaker hole, mark holes, drill, mount. Took me maybe 45min at the most and thats the first time installing anything on my car.

cavi's come with factory 6x9's...you just need to use the factory brackets. but good luck putting your deck back on if you have raised tweeters in the speakers. just make sure that you put something along the bottom of the bracket if you have subs,,,,they will rattle like hell on the back deck. if you mount them on top of your rear deck use long strong screws and insulate inbetween the rear deck(if you have subs) to prevent the air from the sub pushing up the deck and loosining the screws.
its not the car...its the driver
Expand the hole. I did it with a grinding stone on a dremel. It will allow for the factory look.
mounting them on top will get them ROBBED...TRUST ME!!!! cut the damn sheetmetal.
