Whats your sub box size, third gen
Wednesday, May 25, 2005 4:45 PM
I'm looking to put my subs in my car (2000 2.2L Cavalier) pretty soon and was curious what the max size I could go is. I've built many boxes for my car but before I had access to table saws and every tool imaginable. Now that I've moved I have a drill... and thats it. So I'm going to have to rely on Home Depot doing the cutting for my box and I need it to be basically as big as possible and to for sure fit the first time because I can't really modify the box easily if lets say it's 1" to tall.

So my question to all you 3rd gen cavalier guys is what are the dimentions of your sub boxes... and I don't care if you have to install the subs after or if you have to install through the rear seat, it just has to be able to go in.

And for the record... I'm shooting for 4cu^ft give or take.

Oh, and I don't want sub boxes that require removal of the spare tire.

Why would you want the biggest box and not the one that's right for whatever subs you're going to use? And 4 cubic ft of volume isn't all that much... 4pcs 12"x24" and 2 sheets that are 24"x24" would give you a box w/4cubicft of volume

Well, first off thanks for the audio lesson Brian, it helps me so much with what I'm looking for in this post.

For starters... you don't compete in stereo competitions do you? Just because the company I bought the woofers for suggests between 1 - 1.5cu^ft ported doesn't mean that is the only size of box these subs will work in NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS. Take the time to find yourself a decent box building program and do some experiementing... try WinISD it's free and fairly easy to use. I can make the box as big as I want (within reason) and tune it for whatever frequency I enjoy listening too... I couldn't give a rats ass what the company suggests as a general rule.

And I know 4cu^ft isn't all that much for a sub box for 2 12" subs, I never said it was huge anywhere in my post. But again, using BassBox Pro 6 I've played around with the size of box and found that going much bigger really isn't giving me any leaps and bound gains so why bother going much bigger if it means a huge pain in the ass installing it? If someone has a box size that equals 5cu^ft and fits into the cav without problems then cool, I'll use it and modify my ports to accomidate and vis versa if there is one design slightly smaller.

And your 4cu^ft box... well for starters it can't be built the way you describe and I'll let you figure out why, plus using 0.75" MDF you actually are only achieving about 3.5cu^ft internal volume. Next, you don't take into any consideration the volume of the subs or the port or internal bracing... I have rather large subs and am going to have a fairly big port or set of ports... thus your sortof 4cu^ft box would actually be closer to around 2.5cu^ft internal when it's all finished. So basically, I need a box about what... 75% larger then what you're thinking? No wonder you figure it's not that much having a 4cu^ft box... you don't know what you're talking about.

So hey, take this as a learning experience and do some research before you post like you know what you're talking about.

35" wide X 15" tall X 9 1/2" deep. It's all 3/4" MDF , which ends up being just over 1 cubic feet per side. It fits through the trunk opening, but it's HEAVY with the subs in it.

13 cubes external. I guess I dont count in this one do I?

Charlz: Do you think it would be at all possible to have a larger depth? I know 35" wide is kindof set in stone because of the hinges on the trunk lid, and the height I wouldn't want to go much bigger then 15" just quickly looking inside the trunk. But the depth is where the most play I think can come from.

Damnit I wish I just had a table saw... build it and if it's a bit tight saw off an inch and try it again!

You can go up to 17" tall ...mine is...phil

35" wide x 25.5" tall x 14.25" deep (3/4" MDF)

FYI: you have to cut some sheet metal to fit it in and ya have to put it in from the back seat...

sorry the hiegth and depth is flipped:
14.25" high
25.5" deep.

Obviously you're such an expert you shouldn't need to ask for anyone's help so what are you doing here?

Use some common sense next time and read between the lines. You asked for a 4cuft box that would fit in the trunk, I gave you dimensions for one. Obviously you'd have to adjust for the thickness of the material you're going to use. You didn't specify what size MDF you had planned, how many or what size subs would be installed, or that you wanted 4cuft total after accounting for what the subs take up.

So why don't you chalk this up as a lesson and understand that I can't read minds.

Peace out

.

Well as far as being an expert, if I had the tools here where I am I wouldn't be asking about the size of boxes. I want it to be as big as possible, but still be able to slide into the trunk. I can design all I want, but if I get all the pieces cut at Home Depot and build it and find that it can't slide into the trunk cause it's slightly too large to fit through the opening, it's a bit of a pissoff since it can't be easily modified. Thats the whole premis of my post.

And yeah I did say I wanted 4cu^ft... Whenever my group works on stereo's we always talk about size being the final internal after all things are accounted for, I guess you're right you can't read minds and that I should've specified that bit, so sorry for going off the deep end a bit with ya

Rapfiend: I'm really interested in your box... sounds pretty much exactly what I'm thinking about. How much of the metal do you have to cut out in order to slide it in? I'm assuming you needed to yank out the front/rear seats and those plastic triangle pieces covering the metal going into the back... but whichever once those plastic pieces are reinstalled you shouldn't be able to see where it's cut.

very interesting. Judging by your sig and the RE sub shown I'm assuming you are fairly big into stereo's. Is your box ported to the top or towards the rear? Cause I've been thinking of the subs firing up, with the slot port as far back as possible firing up so that there is the possibility of interchangable ports for competing. This will be the first stereo I've built in this car for competing so I was curious if anyone else knows which preforms better as far as ports/sub firing direction.

just those triangle parts, the plastic covers it up just like you said. All I did was fold the seats down, remove the plastic piece, bust out a dremel and cut away. Then put box in, put plastic back in, and put seats up…
my bos is ported in the same direction as the subs face. Porting up wont sound that great in trunk cars iirc. IIRC subs facing up dont sound as great as facing them either to the front or the back. And you can still have changeable ports, but I don’t really know much about making boxes for that. But yea CRX boxes really wont work well in a trunk car. Lates.

Thats a pretty big box you have there! How does it sound having the subs firing into the cab? I've only ever tried that once with a couple 10's in a small box and didn't really like the sound of it.

But yeah, thanks for all the replies guys. Just checking out some of these boxes has given me a good idea how I want to put mine in. Maybe this weekend I'll have to get working on it

that was the most dickheaded response i've ever seen in the audio forum. you ask for all this advice, but as someone said, you dont have a fuc<ing tape measure? give me a break. they cost under 5 bucks at home depot. you claim you're the sh!t but cant even get a few measurements for yourself and put 2 and 2 together.

Sara: Will that box fit? It says 38" wide, I don't think that will go between the hinges on your trunk unless I'm missing something.
